Pre-TGS Gears of War HD Gameplay Video

A discussion of GoW's rendering quality seems so out of place in this thread given the video - you simply can't judge it based on that video's quality, so much is washed out etc.

It's obvious from direct media that the game is technically very accomplished. The most technically solid on X360 thusfar? Probably. Although I would distinguish myself between technical competency and visual appeal, although on the latter, despite niggles I have, it is also amongst the best on X360 imo. At least in shots..

From the vid: similar scenes to what we've seen before. The cover mechanic looks interesting, and I really want to see how co-op plays out. It just looks like it could be a good fun intense action-er.The music sounds very fitting too.

Motion/animation/dynamics obviously need a lot of work though. Some of the effects too. This would be a dealbreaker for me, but I'm fairly confident it'll be a lot better in this regard by the time it's launching. For now, though, as a package, I'm more impressed by other games on 360 like GRAW.

I'd say this is one of the best looking 360 games, the gameplay from what ive seen seems kinda iffy for me but im sure its just in my head. I dont really like how every small thing like pushing a car, turning a valve, or walking down a road turns into a cut-scene, it seems too scripted that way. Instead it would be better if you yourself could push the car or turn the valve, kinda like god of war's puzzles.

kinda weird the ingame dialog wasnt translated to japanese, i bet the japanese audience didnt have a clue about what was going on when they were pushing that car.

i liked how he reloaded that shotgun. :)

I just watched it and the animation still needs to be improved. What I do like about it is the detail of the the guys in general. It looks plasticy in picture form...wut when their moving they look different...and it does look much better. With still a few more months to go, I hope that they work on the animation of the characters since the visuals are great already.

What I did notice..was that certain movement was more fluid than other types of movement...which you could say that their currently improving animation and have gotten to certain aspects already. LIke Scooby pointed out, the reloading of the shotgun looked very good (very fluid) also the area where he pointed the shotgun over the barrier was also fluid.

Not all the animation is done yet, obviously. I'm sure there's placeholder and unfinished stuff in the demonstrations.

Seriously, I'm baffled to what's so impressive about this game. The framerate is horrendous, the animation choppy - not even the lighting or the horrible fire effects make up for it. And then there's the surroundings that leave me pretty speachless (and not in a positive way)... and then there's the art-direction.. simply hideous.

You want to know something funny? I heard the exact same comments after E3 2001 about this little game called Halo....

I was also very disappointed after watching it. I'm not going to judge the engine, graphics, shadows or any of that crap, specially because the video didn't have the best quality. I personally think the graphics are going to be veeeeeery good. But frankly, the animation was total crap! I mean, why use a hyper-realistic engine, with hyper-realist graphics, with hyper-realistic characters...only to have them moving around like some old arcade game character. Making a character look real is worthless if they don't move like they were supposed to.

You know what's funnier? Most games that people say that kind of stuff about usually end up being true. One time in a thousand does not set a precedence. I'm not saying it will be a crappy game (It seems like it will be entertaining -- coop especially), but using what was said about Halo and the reaction it got is sort of silly. Just because Halo turned out to be a beloved game by many-a-gamers doesn't mean any other game will when it gets a similar reaction (and Gears of War isn't really getting a similar reaction).

I've heard the same type of comments made about many games, and they ended up being true.

As a matter of fact, Halo DID have horrible framerate issues. So, back to the issue here...

It's getting VERY tiring watching the PS fan boys coming into every X360 thread and complain about minor flaws. I could do the same in the MGS4 threads, but I think it's in poor taste. If you hate MS/X360, please stop posting in these threads.

Most of the comments here (positive or negative) are constructive. The reason the "other" thread broke down is because "someone" came in and compared two games and basically said one looks bad the other is better. He/She even said that its expected because past series of the game show that this would happen. All that without stating WHY exactly MGS4 looked bad (Took a couple pages of comments before he/she stated what they dislike about the game).

I'm saying the game has animation issues. I also stated that it looks like its being resolved with whats left of the development time. Go ahead and post your critisism in the MGS4 thread...just find something valid to nitpick about.

Finally..I don't think its a good idea to reference to another thread thats closed...because you'll just pull the discourse into this thread. So lets just end it here and keep on topic with Gears of War please.

We would be truly blessed as gamers if every game looked this good 6 months before release. Wake up guys, we have a way to go on this yet and the final dev kits got there 2 weeks ago. (And they may have gotten the 2.8ghz versions! :) )

You missed the point. You obviously failed to notice who the developer of Gears of War is, since they have every bit as good of a reputation in creating great games as Bungie does.

As a general rule, if you are betting against Epic, you're going to lose.

And you are right, Gears of War isn't getting a similar reaction, there was far more criticism firected towards Halo while GoW is getting tons of priase by everyone who has seen the latest build.
