Pre-TGS Gears of War HD Gameplay Video

i've got a headache just from watching the video.... no way i'm gonna play a game with that framerate.

launch date its still many months away... lets hope they get it right.

framerate is now mostly in cutscenes, not in gameplay anymore like it was in G4TV showing. and the graphics seemed to have upped.

btw the game is coming out in March, thats 7 months away

come on, i saw that G4tv footage.
Framerate fails everywhere, not just cutscenes. But like i said, they have many months to improve.

It's been on th dev kit for 2 weeks, and is already showing a better framerate than E3, I watched E3 too and this is alot smoother.

I think in 7 months you won't have to worry.

Everyone rags on the animations but I thought they were a mixed bag, some not so good, and some very smooth. His running, and rolling could definately be better. However, the shooting around side, over the top, his gun reloading looked very very good.

There's one sequance near the end where he goes from shooting over top to reloading his gun and back to shooting, it all happens very fast and very smooth transitions between each animation. Looked great.

The game looks fun as hell!

Seriously, I'm baffled to what's so impressive about this game. The framerate is horrendous, the animation choppy - not even the lighting or the horrible fire effects make up for it. And then there's the surroundings that leave me pretty speachless (and not in a positive way)... and then there's the art-direction.. simply hideous.

This really has nothing to do with the platform its on - in fact, Ghost Recon looks much better IMO. Maybe someone can explain to me what's so extciting about this one? :???:

its called showing the game instead of rendering

Two words: Bump mapping

Wahahaha... I didn't even noticed that. haha... haaa. Ahem.

Anyway, PHIL, does indeed have a point, but it's mostly taste isn't it? Art direction, game direction and so on. I really dislike it myslef, but I still think it definately will, artistically, appeal to others, so it still seems like a quality title. You have to kinda sperate your tastes from yourself when judging things like this. The only place I think the game's technically inferior or perhaps I should say current gen is the animations. They're quite quite bad. The main character almost wobbles his way across the field.

Please. This game won best Graphics of 2005 at E3, not GR3, and those graphics have since improved.

if your baffled as to what's impressive about this game, you're the very very very small minority, everyone else is blown away.

I think the oversaturation of lighting is just a bit too much -- the lighting colors seem a bit too intense. The characters look like action figures. There is just a gratuitous amount of lighting -- this seems to be a problem with a lot of next gen games; HDR to the max. Now, don't get me wrong, they look impressive and the UE3 engine seems fantastic by all accounts, but there is something strange about it that just doesn't sit right with me. Both UT2k7 and GoW have this problem.

I also agree that Ghost Recond 3 is a more eye-pleasing game, from what I've seen, anyway.

Also, curiosity has me here. Where are these awards you speak of? I can't find a site that has Gears of War listed as best graphics of E3 award. Every site seems to have its own awards, so I'm not sure if there are official awards or what (I'd also like to see them if so, since I apparently missed them or can't remember).

Siesmologist, Phil, _Phil_, Meisforutsu, Find me ONE credible game-site that was not completely impressed and blown away by the GFX in GOW.

bobbler - GOW won best Xbox 360 game, best visuals and best of show according to 1up. I believe this was the offical E3 awards.

IGN:
"From the top down, there is the excellent lighting system, showing superb contrast, reflections, and shadow on every object. The glowing, flashy particles, including the breakable statues, windows, cars, and the giant explosions are certainly stimulating as well as pleasing to the eye. The impressive and over-the-top creature design, highlighted by the behemoth Locust beasts, strapped with an arsenal of missiles, guns, and what-have-you on their collective backs are beautiful as well as forbidding."

GAMESPY:

"we can definitely say that this is easily the most impressive Xbox 360 game that's been shown so far. By utilizing the powerful Unreal 3 engine, the game has an incredibly sharp look, with ultra-realistic textures and plenty of cool lighting and particle effects. It's hard to even put into words how good this game looks, from the smooth animations to the little details like spent shells cascading to the ground. The gunfire looks particularly great, as the muzzle flashes light up the environment and tracers rip through the air."

Worthplaying.com
"Some of those shots showed off character models and environments that were easily CG movie quality. For a time, we just thought they were concept renders made to show off what the engine might be able to do, but heading into E3, we learned that most of those shots were actually in-game and real time.

At about the point when I picked my jaw off the floor, the guys from Epic informed us that this was "only" running on a top-of-the-line PC and that the final Xbox 360 version would end up looking at least 20% better than it does now. "

GAMING AGE:

"Unprecedented visuals in next-generation gaming. "Gears of War" ushers in the next generation with unprecedented visuals. The Unreal Engine 3 technology pushes high-definition visual designs and brings out the smallest details in the largest battle. Gamers will experience a rich dynamic world with an unprecedented level of detail."

ActionTrip:
"Everyone who has seen Gears of War behind closed doors at the show, however, agrees that if there is one title that truly highlights the awesome potential of Microsoft's next-generation hardware, it's Epic's new puppy. But before we get into the visuals (and honestly, all you need to do is see the .AVI file that is included with the preview to realize how good this game looks),"

The official awards are the game critics awards http://www.gamecriticsawards.com/win.html

The winner for Special Graphics Commendation was Killzone, BTW.

The ones listed on 1up are 1up's -- there doesn't seem to be any official ones. I didn't see any site (honestly, it was only a brief look at 3-4 sites though) that said GoW won best graphics.

And it also was in runner-up for best graphics -- UT2k7 won it.

Those quotes aren't really definitive either.

I'm not arguing here, I know a lot of people think Gears of War looks fabulous, but it doesn't sit right with me (a few other games don't either, mainly because the overuse of lighting effects which just look a bit gaudy). I don't want to get anyone's panties in a bundle, I'm just saying for various reasons I don't think it is the most impressive Xbox360 game.
