Possible reason for PVR Series 4 cancellation?

I was just wondering. I figured i'd get more info from past cancelled projects than current ones. I figure a nice 8x2 tiler with 256 bus with a core of 250 and ram of 300 should beat the geforce fx and the radeon 9700 easily . I'm guessing powervr (or whatever they call themselves now i keep forgetting) don't have the money or aren't willing to spend enough to pump out cutting edge cards untill they make some market penetration.

Forget those levels, hey look at Trident. They talked big and delivered so little. Now they are laughing stocks.

Series 4 would have most deffinately been Geforce 3/4 performance levels AFAICS. You only need to look at the specs to see that. Three times the fillrate of Kyro II, three times the bandwidth of Kyro II, added vertex shader and the rest of the architecture also refined.

I had it on reasonable authority that Series 4 would have been competitive with high end GF4.

What a shame it was scrapped eh......... BOOOOOO to STM

If Kyro Joe still hangs out here then shame on STM. o_O

not really. not that's known to the public anyway. just that Series 5 is going to be on 0.13 micron and out in 2003. it seems it will be a high-end part like Series 4 was going to be. Series 6 is only known to be in development. I wish the Videologic/Imgtech people the best.

IIRC the series 4 would have been priced as a mid range card and would have the performance on or above the geforce 4 which was the performance king at the time the kyro 3 was estimated to come out.

PVR have stated that they are going for a high performance chip for series 5 and have even mentioned it may be the performance leader. In my opinion the tech is definitely there for them to do it, it's just a question of whether they can get the financial backing.

Next year I'm planning on either buying a PVR card or a r400, I just have to wait and see which one will impress me the most ;).

Series 4 performing as well or better than GF4 as in GF4Ti aka NV25?
not the GF"4"MX aka NV17 which isn't even in the same leauge as a
GF3 Ti200. right?
