Played - Episode 44 (Braid, Miyamoto, Geometry Wars: RE2, Soul Calibur IV)

...good times with games.

After a few weeks’ break and some technical difficulties, Played is back with a particularly bizarre episode. This week, the crew discusses Diablo III corpse runs, Wizard: The Movie: A Diablo III Tale, and the upcoming StarCraft II trilogy. Plus, we take a trip down memory lane with Prototype and the most pretentious developer video diary ever recorded.

Finally, Liz has been playing Rock Band 2 and Spore, Chris is immersed in World of Goo, and Mark is playing through Dead Space and De Blob.

Played - Episode 42 (Diablo III, Pikmin 3, Mirror's Edge, Left 4 Dead, Dragon Age)

Here we go:

E42.jpg

We’ve got a lot to talk about now that E3 has come and gone, but first we revel in the excitement of Blizzard’s recent Diablo III announcement! Then Elizabeth forces Chris to explain how he got Nintendo to inadvertently announce Pikmin 3 at this years E3. Then we move on to the games, including: Left 4 Dead, Mirror’s Edge, Dragon Age: Origins, Rage, GTA:Chinatown Wars, Microsoft’s new Dashboard design, Too Human, and much more!

If I may offer some constructive criticism - the coughing and breathing into the mic really comes off as "unprofessional" and lessens my interest in listening to the show. Same goes for the constant swearing (females that swear that much make me believe they're over-compensating in attempting to "be like one of the guys").

On a positive note, the content you listed got me to click the link, and is keeping me listening so kudos.

Yeah. I can understand your criticism--it actually bothers me too. I've tried earnestly to resolve the breathing and such, but there isnt a lot we can do. Sometimes it just works itself in. We're just a little, indepentant gaming podcast unlike the ones on the 1UP network. I would give almost anything for a studio. :(

Also, thanks for checking us out and for the honest opinions. I'll pass it on to Liz. The coughing was intentional (in the beginning, right?)

No problem, thanks for taking the time to share your work with us, and for being such a good sport about the criticism :)

I've listened to the whole show, and other than my initial complaints I have no others. I liked the candid discussion of games. Made the show very easy to listen to.

That's awesome--that's exactly what we're setting out to do. Kind of like going to get drinks with your buddies and chatting about games, right? You know we're going to be doing our 50th Podcast here soon and we're definitely up for suggestion of changes. If there is something you want to recommend please feel free to drop us a line too. hotforplayed @ gmail dot com.

I think one of the really great things is that we have zero sponsors too. I dont want to sound like a shill here (but I am I know), but I'm really proud of the fact that we have zero ads anywhere. I pay for everything out of my own pocket. Our opinions really are our opinions with zero influence. Ok I'll stop now. :p

Played - Episode 43 (Comic-Con, Fable 2, Fallout 3, The Conduit, Siren & more)

Mods: I cleared this post about our little Podcast with one of the mods (AlStrong, last week) before posting.

Hey hey, just wanted to post our most recent Podcast. No ads on the website or in the Podcast--just a fun, good time chatting about games.

Amazingly, we’re already back, the week after our previous episode. This time, Chris covers the San Diego Comic-Con and tacks on a bit of residual E3 discussion, including High Voltage’s impressive Wii shooter The Conduit, Lionhead’s Fable 2, and Bethesda’s Fallout 3.

As we move on to what we’ve been playing, Mark revisits Mass Effect and BioShock yet again, and seeths with anger over Siren: Blood Curse’s terrible installation. Elizabeth admits to boss battle brutality in Space Invaders: Extreme, and Chris has been playing a trio of turn-based titles on Xbox 360: Civilization Revolution, Ticket to Ride, and Catan.

Finally, we address the reactions of two successful musicians, Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney and John Mayer of John Mayer, to Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Chris rebuts. Plus: Everday Shooter! It’s still awesome!

In the latest episode of Played, we kick off with discussion of Nintendo’s ban on designer Shigeru Miyamoto discussing his personal hobbies, then launch straight into what we’re playing.

Xbox Live Arcade is a big theme, with Chris and Mark playing Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (and making unsolicited comparisons to Everyday Shooter) and Chris taking on Braid. Liz has been into Soul Calibur IV, but less into its absurd achievements.

Finally, Mark has returned to Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune again, and he finally finished The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess almost two years after its release.

Played is back again, making up for lost time with a beefy episode. First up is discussion of Ensemble’s disassembly, leading into whether Rare is actually living up to its astronomical price tag and how honest Microsoft is being about its commitment to Games for Windows. We have a bit of a disagreement about Bethesda’s reaction to Australia’s threats to ban Fallout 3, but no disagreement as to whether the iPhone is actually the best handheld gaming platform around (hint: it’s not).

As to what we’ve been playing, Liz has reenergized her dormant Viva Pinata addiction with the new Trouble in Paradise, and Chris has gone back to Call of Duty 4 and is both impressed and slightly dismayed. Mark found a lot to love in Spore if you stick with it, and was actually pleasantly surprised by Too Human–after initially being unpleasantly unsurprised.
