Panel Resolution Upscale Spinoff

Yeah, quantization errors are inherent to the conversion process, but that difference depends on how well the conversions are done both at the output device and at the display, and hence can vary from large to virtually indisguisable. I was just confused because the way you phrased your statement suggested something particular to analog component connections, rather than DAC-ADC in general.

BS marketing ?

People want to be "HD ready". Full HD must be better than not-so-full-HD.

People are sheep. It's easy to market resolution since it's a one dimensional metric, and more *must* be better.

You'd need to sit closer than 6 feet from a 50 inch 1920x1080 display to appreciate any increase in resolution.

Contrast, colour reproduction and response time are more important than resolution at current HD resolutions, but that is a lot harder to explain to the average consumer, especially since there's no clear standard way to report these things (ANSI contrast/absolute contrast/dynamic contrast and grey-to-grey response time vs white-to-black response time etc.)

Great points! I cringe when people go out and get a 1080p 42inch Vizio, sit about 12ft away and try to brag about getting a new 1080p set. The general consumer is like a moth. Attracted to bright shiny things. Thus you see "dynamic" mode set up in stores with contrast, brightness, color saturation and sharpness through the roof. The picture is ugly as sin but for the Joe Q, this is their idea of "HD." Couple that with big numbers and cheap prices and you got yourself a sale.
