Overclockers get to test R520?

No, I think they did that just because they had manufacturers pissed off at them that they couldn't fill their X850 XT orders yet they were selling them on their site.... ;)

Maybe that is what ATI wants, or ATi has given up on X8x0 line sales (at least the 500+ range. Could help explain why they cancelled X850 XT orders from their website if they were not going to make many more...

That's a bit of a red herring. ATI cancelled orders from their online shop in order to send people to their partners. ATI didn't want to be selling cards while their partner companies are screaming for more stock, so ATI effectively sent their own stock out to their partners.

"Attendees will get the opportunity to preview the world's first 512MB gaming card and one lucky gamer will even get to take one home."

There is no way that ATI would give away a R520. ATI wouldn't risk NVIDIA getting there hands on a R520.

I would suspect ATI wouldn't want to show the new hardware unless it was going to launch soon. Therefore I suspect it will launch immenently whether it is an 850 refresh (as the 3D mark picture suggests it will be called 950) or if it is a new product such as the 520.

Why wouldn't an R520 be called a 950XT?

R520 is a new product...but not radically different than the current cores by all (rumored) accounts.

I find that unlikely, it would be a mess for naming RV5xx, the high end 'X' naming is already saturated with X800 and X850 XL, XT, pro, SE variants ; moreover there's more difference between R520 and R4xx than between R4xx and R3xx (which are nearly the same thing :) ), and ATI is known to do the opposite of what you're proposing (radeon 9200 could have been called 8200, X300 could be 9300 and X600 be.. 9600

If they plan to launch it soon, why not?

There was a time last year I was pretty sure I'd be able to get an R520 in January, so I wouldn't be too shocked to see it come out now.

I would suggest that nothing like R520 would be talked about prior to CeBit and even then I wouldn't expect to get an annoucement or any public information.

hopefully you have lowered all these crazy expectstions.. o_O

Relax, it's not like people were taking to the streets and foaming at the mouth. Speculation is part of the message board enjoyment with new product releases. You're free to not participate, but there's no reason to get uptight.

Hehe. Disappointed eh?

Maybe it's a card with 2 GPU's and 512m of ram. I know I'm dreaming but it would be nice :) .
I hope not. . . I'm more interested in seeing a boost in the featureset, though. Multiple-GPUs can remain in workstation cards or otherwise very specialized solutions, for all I care.

Two current ATI GPU's would give more rendering power, but wouldn't actually be that compelling a product because ATI needs a SM3.0 part which is pretty imminent anyway. Two R480s just arn't going to cut it if R520 can give similar price/performance with significant additional features in the next 3-4 months (going by a 1H 2005 launch).

Also I think two GPUs on a single card seems unlikely, as both Nvidia and ATI are using the capabilities of PCIe to give them a big part of what makes dual-card rendering solutions feasable.

However, I wouln't be surprised to see R520 arriving with 512mb RAM from some of the ATI partners.

How bloody anti-climactic, I demand a full refund on the useless days of speculation! :?

Likewise. All this for the fleeting benefit of the benchmarking geekdom, and these 512Mb R480 boards will likely not even make it to commercial production. Unless they unveil something more tangible on the mobo front, this kind of overblown hype will deservedly backfire.
