Old ps2 question: MGS3 graphic quality

This discussion on what games are good or not are off topic and should be in the gaming forum (but the original post is okay here), but I will add to it just to correct this little fallacy. Something being 'boring' isn't a scientific property that can be measured and explained. It's totally subjective and individual. There's many a game or book or film I find boring that others don't, and vice versa. You can discuss points you liked or disliked, but you can't prove something is or isn't boring. You can't scientifically prove a game is not boring and therefore observe all those that find it boring are wrong, no more so than you can scientifically prove everyone's favourite colour should be green or everyone should scientifically prefer dogs to cats. If a person says they found a game boring, that's how they found it (unless they're being awkward!) and they're allowed to feel that way.
So maybe you could answer what is that weird lighting in MGS3? Any thooughts?

Sure, but say this game wasn't my cup of tea.;) Don't just say it was boring or bad because it will deter others from playing a great game. That was my point.
I understand how you feel but this is a forum. 90% of wat people write here are their own opinions or PR talk from the multi nationals they love so much, not facts. It's not necessary to add 'imo' or 'imho' in every damn sentence. ;)

As for the weird reflections, I way also surprised by the quality of MGS3 cutscene graphics. Do you remember the black leather the to-be-rescued russian scientist was wearing?
It looks like bump mapping but like akira already said, konami has been developing PS2 games for 6 years now. It's no surprise they found some tricks to make their games look so good.

Damn I remember that. I was like, "this is looking like a Xbox game" when I seen that coat. I would what tricks Kojima Productions will bring out with MGS4?

frankly , after seeing what they have done with only additive and substractive blending modes,i can't imagine what they 'll do with a full featured GPU.

Wow, I'm amazed at some of the comments on MGS3 in here. It's probably the single best game I've played this generation. It did take some time getting into, but the experience was so rewarding and memorable.

I'm glad the series took the direction it has (a natural evolution of its gameplay) and I for one hope that the series will continue this path with MGS4.

Don't take this the wrong way, i was in no way bashing the game, it was just a personal observation... I think i got caught up with games that are much easier to get into than MGS3 like Katamari Damaci and then newer games after that. To be honest i just could not be bothered to read those huge discussions about things that to be honest don't really interest me...

Also, for some strange reason, on my HDTV it just looked dreadful, much worse than other games running at 480i like GOW or Kingdom Hearts 2 or many others... I'm sure i'll give it a go on PS3, if i can play it upscaled to 720p as promised...

Indeed it was very impressive in many aspects. Only the framerate was dissapointing. Especially in many of the cutscenes. It looked way too choppy. Something I rarely expect from a game made by Kojima

Interesting ... MGS3 looked pretty good on my HDTV at 480i.

Oh no worries - I know exactly what you are refering to. In fact, I went through the exact same phase at the time: I bought GT4 and MGS3 at the same day and despite the huge MGS fan I am, I just couldn't get into it and started playing GT4 for a couple of weeks until giving MGS another go. Even then, it was a pain getting into: It just seemed too complicated and too big of an effort to do it all right. I was lost. Still, being the MGS fan I was, I forced myself and once I got over the beginning bit, I actually started to enjoy it more and more until the gameplay and story sucked me in.

Now after having completed it a couple of times, I rate it as the best MGS ever: It's polished, the story is great and the gameplay is very varied and challenging. I love the sneaking bits and for the first time, I actually felt like being in a jungle and at times, I really thought I could get lost in the jungle.

PS: ChryZ; damn, that's a nice HD-TV! :devilish:

Yeah I'm hating on your TV too ChryZ. Lucky bastard.:p

No seriously, I've never played a game with so much natural life living at one time. I loved the attention to detail while walking in the jungle.
