Old games that still look good today

knightlore, though only really 2 colors + a very low res but in some respects better than a few games today WRT scenery interaction

Now an XBL version of Knightlore (or indeed Alien 8/Pentagram etc) would be nice. Wouldn't mind replaying some of those.

Undying
Unreal Tournament
AVP2
NOLF2
many N64 games..

Edit:which PS1 games are worth still downloading to play on PS3? I'm looking for some old school games to play. I've done all the N64 games I can find from Wii VC.

tekken 3, resident evil and driver. amazing games
Simon the sorcerer is still pretty :)

I'll throw a few names into the hat:

Curse of Monkey Island

I want to say Wave Race 64 because it stands out in my memory for its water effects, but I have a funny feeling I'd vomit if I saw it now :D

Deus Ex

Quake - There's something about the polygon density, texture resolution and rendering resolution that worked really well together and made the game feel like a chunky, solid, real (and scary!) world. Pretty much every FPS since Quake has seen these three things fall out of balance, where the latter two seem to show up the deficiencies in the former.

Grand Prix 2

EuroFighter 2000 (DID)

How about this?

Bomb the Bass megablast was the soundtrack. This was before Wipeout and it´s big name tracks :)
That was it. Astounding what you could get from a 1-bit DAC. (Then again, IIRC there was a speech synthesiser on the apple ][ which also meant it used a 1-bit DAC so I guess more impressive things were done with very little hardware)

I must add Alien vs Predator 1 for PC (1999), really good looking with all destructible lightsources, really good looking particle effects (muzzle flash, blood, steeam/smoke etc).
Now all living creatrues could be torn into pieces. That means where your bullets hit that body part would be torn off from the body. It also got dynamic 3D water (YES!) that reacted to the input movments or objects thrown into it.

Best multiplayer ever, Alien vs Predator vs Human.... not disuptable!

I still think the old LucasArts fighter games look decent even today. Granted, the original X-Wing is outshone by Tie Fighter and again by XvT and yet more so by X-Wing Alliance, but even the very first game in this "series" is still aesthetically pleasing (to me at least) even 15 years after its release.

There are plenty of PS1 games that look good and are still very playable.

Pretty much any RPG with pre-rendered backgrounds still looks great (some were water color based!). But as for actual 3D games there are a few that I find very playable still, however thanks to emulators, they look even better with higher z-buffering and interpolation:

Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere - Still my favorite AC game, and easily the most original and boldest. It's a shame the NA and EU versions were chopped up as opposed to the JP version.

Silent Bomber: A rare little gem from the PS1's final days that not only looks good but is an incredibly well built game-aside from the English dubbing. The explosions are still fucking AWESOME.

Crash Bandicoot games: Before Naughty Dog left Universal and had to leave this series in the hands of Universal out of contract agreements, it was still an amazing and fun series that really helped to define the PS1.

Spyro: Just like Naughty Dog, Insomniac had to leave this series with universal out of contract and of course the quality went down the shitter. But it's still fun to take a trip down memory lane. The original is my favorite platformer from the entire 1st Generation 3D era.

Now when it comes to the Final Fantasy games (in particular 8) I think people really don't give alot of credit or actually forget about how freaking awesome the GF summon scenes were. They were amazingly well built, and sometimes I can't believe the PS1 could even render them when I go back and play. The one that always comes to mind is Ifrit's summon and attack. That coupled with the extreme vibrations of the controller and me desperately trying to boost his attack power with SELECT + Square button was just awe inspiring.

How on Earth can Halo 2 be called an old game?! I guess the progress of Console Time must whizz along faster than I ever imagined!

Hehe, I guess by "old" I am equating it on "old" technology rather than the traditional meaning of "old" which is time-based. :p

if we are talking old old school games then add:

Fairlight - C64
Faery Tale Adventure - Amiga
Elite - Amiga
Sky Fox - Apple 2
Beneath a Steel Sky - Amiga
Shadow of the Beast - Amiga

just to name a few....
