Seriously, Nvidia came up with the GPU marketing phrase. Did ATi ever call one of their chips a GPU? Now ATi has turned the tables by calling the R9700 a VPU (visual processing unit). Will Nvidia follow suit and call their next chip a VPU, or are we going to have a silly situation where each one calls their chips by different but interchangeable terms?

Is it some cool new trend to post mean responses? ;)

Probably, so let me join in. ;)

Poll is a bit boring, to say the least.

Anyway, maybe some one can answer this question for me?

Why are there no reviews of the R300 yet? I ask this because you can already purchase one if you live in japan. There are stores in Akiba (?) that have them on the shelves already. No need wait on pre-orders or anything, just walk in and buy it.

I cannot tell you how ironic this post is. Just a few hours ago, this thought popped into my head, though not entirely the same...but damn close.

"Why didn't ATI come up with their own 'term' some time ago, if for no other reason, but to give you the feeling that they weren't following in the footsteps..."

I think I thought about this after having read some article (can't recall which) that stated a couple of things ATI needed to do in order to really compete with nVidia...

Ironic indeed.

I'm of two opinions on this. First, someone needed to invent a term to respond to the 3D chip besides calling it "3D chip" all the time. I like the GPU terminology because of the parallels with the CPU. Remember Aureal called their sound processor an APU, and Sony was referring to their PS1 chip as a GPE (graphics processing engine). Sony also refers to some parts of the PS2 as IPU

On the other hand, perhaps some new term really is needed to distinguish between the pre-GPU fixed functionality, the DX8 era programmability, and the new general purpose DX9 functionality.

However, I feel the VPU term is awkward and "GPU" sounds better to me. I like the word "graphics" instead of "visual". Moreover, does Intel or AMD need new terms to refer to the IA-64 or Hammer? SPU? (Super processing unit?) PPU (parallel processing unit?) WPU (wide processing unit?) Seems kind of silly and confusing to the consumer.

I'd prefer one standard terminology is picked and people stick with it. The only reason not to use GPU is if NVidia has trademarked it, otherwise, why not use it? Not-invented-here syndrome?

And BTW, I hate "CineFx" and NSR, et al. I would just as soon have everyone drop their PRFeature(tm) labeling and just use a generic term. To me, there's no reason not to just adopt/steal the GPU term from nVidia and use it. Academia seems to have adopted it now.

I assume they won't follow the term "VPU", since ATI use it for R300...

Considering that Nvidia will market NV30 as the first "Cinematic Shading GPU", I'd say it will probably be named "CSGPU" or something... :D

My money's on CPUg, soon to be shortened to CPU when they finally reveal their evil plan to take over the world. ;)

Youv'e got it all wrong....its gotta be PuPu (tm)

Parallel Uber Processing Unit :D

Pupu is finnish and means 'Bunny' :D

I still want TItanium Turbo Series. ;)

Well, I'm sorry I bored you. Maybe I should have started yet another NV30 thread instead?

oh yes please, they are so much fun ... not

while not the most original thread, its still interesting. Especially since 3D Labs invented to term to indicate its major architectural step towards programmability. I personally don't think (or rather expect) that in comparison, R300 or NV30 will be flexible enough to really "deserve" the term... ;)

I expect NV30 to be more flexible than P10.
