good. hopefully tomorrow we'll hear a few general tidbits about the next major Nvidia architecture after NV4x as well as Nvidia's involvment with SCEI on Playstation3. Jen-Hsun had quite a lot to say about PS3 at a conference over a year and a half ago. now that Nvidia's officially on board, perhaps he'll comment more :)

maybe also some confirmation on NV47 for the spring.

I've just had a listen to the webcast, here are my notes.

Turbocache

Exciting innovation as a result of the introduction of PCI-Express. PCI-E 2.0 will allow them to use this tech in midrange cards. Want to eventually see a situation where you don't need any onboard memory at all.

Intel chipset licence/chipset market

First Intel chipset should be shipping in February. Initially target performance PC's. SLI chipsets allow them to do this. They believe that, in the future, the PC industry will be v. segmented with PC's for specific needs. SLI allows the introduction of the gaming supercomputer. They want to add value to the Intel chipset area. The licence agreement allows them to target all markets (desktop, workstation, server, notebook). They believe that Intel are fair to work with, they want value for value, they believe nVidia can provide this to them. Intel and AMD markets for nVidia should be similar in size at the end of next year

GPU's vs MCP

JHH spoke about this when talking about the Intel chipset. Believes the MCP will target 3 areas - PC, standalone components (network or storage devices) and system on a chip. Sounded really keen about SOC. Believes the GPU is the DSP of the 21st century in that it is extremely versatile and is good for any imaging situation.

Sony deal

AFAI understand, it seems that this started out as a discussion on software and then turned into a hardware agreement as well. Hardware needs of console market are very different to that of the PC. GPU is based on next generation GPU tech (assume NV5x????), it is a custom processor to work specifically with the CELL processor, final prodn silicon should get to Sony later on in the year (I assume he meant next year, though it sounded like this year).

Only about 50 engineers working on the GPU vs 200-250 for Xbox. More were required on Xbox as they also designed the MCP etc. They are building the GPU only for Sony, it is a high volume strategic design win, and worth at least $400-500 mill if PS3 is as successful as PS1 and PS2. The GPU will be the basis of the architecture for all of Sony's consumer electronics stuff, not just PS3. Believes that Xbox2 will be a great product but the PS3 targets a broader market.

Long term vision

Believes that they have an inherit capacity for innovation and a culture for innovation, in that they are prepared to take risks (ala NV3x). They want to go into markets that are at the intersection of computing and digital media processing, which is why they haven't gone into DTV yet. They are ahead of the competition with Turbocache, SLI, SM3.0 and something else (can't remember what it was). They want to be the no 1 producer of the processor of the digital media processor industry. They will focus on marketplaces that have sustainable opportunities that are high volume, and envisage to be a 5-10 billion dollar company.

That's it. Makes sense why they struck the deal with Sony. CELL will probably allow them to do the SOC thing. Be interesting to see where they are in a few years time.

WOW, so finally with PCI-E 2.0 embedded graphics will rule the world. Even Nvidia expect this, cause even midrange cards will use the TC/sideband.
