NV30 Upclose and personal

Warn first that link is 7MB all told for folks on a 56KB link!!! The piccys don't reveal that much new details.

Don't get too excited now people... there are reasons why the cards won't go into mass production until the January-February of next year...

A bit offtopic, but anyone tried the 6x & 8x AA modes using the latest version of aTuner? (there was a thread around here somewhere)...

I recently checked them out myself and came to realize that the impact they make on IQ is pretty substancial, although I bet even GeForce FX won't be able to cope with 8x or even 6x modes at the resolutions we're all used to today with decent framerates...

I remember reading that GeForce FX was actually optimized for 4x AA mode, the entire pipeline was optimized for it...

edit:
there, I found that quote:
Some of the ideas [from LMA2] have been improved, but it is essentially a new design. It's still multi-partitioned as NV25 was, but the difference is that everything has been built around full-speed operation of 4X FSAA. The horsepower in the ROP [GeForceFX's pixel sub-system that reads and writes pixels, checks z-buffers, does blending, does AA, etc.] and the frame-buffer has been sized accordingly, the caches have been sized accordingly, and the arbitration policies have been designed accordingly, so in that sense it's completely new. It's also running at 2X the clock rate, so the entire design had to be changed to take advantage of DDR-2.

Thanks for the link. This confirms my hopes that the NV30 cards will indeed have VIVO/Capture on product launch.

The "VIVO Versatility" makes it pretty clear that at least the high-end cards will be much like the high-end Ti4600's with VIVO/Capture as a standard feature.
