Nokia N-Gage vs GBA??

I doubt if it can even *challange* GBA.....I think SONY should now make an attempt at handheld market now that they are nicely placed with PS2...

btw does anyone know how much GBA contributes to Nin's turnover/profit?

It looks like good internal hardware with a crappy external interface and generic PDA games.

My prediction: If N-Gage and GBA-SP came out the same day, GBA would crush N-Gage into a little pulp.

N-Gaga is aimed at the PDA-lovin' sector of the market.. GBA is a gaming accessory.

Not a chance.
My prediction: For the IT techgeeks only.

How much is that ngauge anyway?

Absolutely no competition for the GBA - this thing is aimed at a completely different market anyway. They can't sell it for just $80 (GBA) or $100 (GBA SP). I think it will cost at least(!) twice as much...

Oh yeah, battery life is ridiculously low: 3 - 6 hours (gaming). Great...

Yeah I don't see how the Ngage and GBA are in direct competition. Some people will actually prefer to have a gaming only portable device, not a cell phone with thousands of buttons. The fact that it's backlit is nice though. It might do well but I doubt it. Sony's upcoming portable is the only one IMO that stands a chance of taking some significant maketshare away from the GBA. I mean, (presumably) higher specs, and the Playstation brand name... They can't really go wrong.

It's a good thing N released the GBA-SP with a nice look and a better screen. They're about to face some stiff competition.

I'm sold...

Lol.

Anyhow, as before I doubt this will hurt the GBA in any way. Two different markets and to be honest, I'm skeptical of how much gaming support this will get anyhow.

Weren't some people here saying it was going to be MBX powered?

Are you sure of this? Speculation has been going on for quite some time about a Sony portable gaming device, but so far nothing solid has been known.

The portable market is a sizable piece of Nintendo´s profits per year, around 40% if I am guessing correctly, and a handheld made with a "slick" design, one that is atractive to the older demographic could carve its own niche, perhaps even becoming a serious competitor for GBA. This is where Sony or MS could come in.

Games up to 3 - 6 hours (depending on game type)
Talk up to 2 - 4 hours

That right there is what will ruin it for real games. I mean if it's "game & Watch" type games than fine. But with alot of GBA games ie Advance Wars, you're just getting started with 4 hours into it.

Yeah an editor from IGNcube said recently that he had heard from reliable sources that Sony was quietly working on their own portable which would be unveiled this year IIRC.

Well, I hope hes right. If anything, it would be very interesting to see what Sony could offer in a handheld system. A handheld with specs comparable to PSOne´s? That would be fantastic.

If you've seen the Pocketeers videos, you'll see that GBA is just as powerful as PSX, really...

Sure. ;)

Fredi

PS: The GBA has no floating point unit, so if you need floating points, your performance will go extremly downhill.
