No region coded games for the PS3?

SONY Computer Entertainment is likely to abandon its practice of region coding games for its PlayStation 3 console, the head of its South Pacific operation said

However, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia managing director, Michael Ephraim, said the company was unlikely to continue the policy as international television standards emerge. "If you look at the fact that it will support high-definition TV, which will be a global standard, there's a good likelihood that it will be global region, as for example we've done with the PSP (PlayStation Portable)," Mr Ephraim said.

Wow we can only hope this is true. Can you imagine being able to play all those Japanese RPGs just weird games like Brain training on the PS3?

Also makes sense with the motion to merge to regional divisions of SCEx into SCEW. Every game developed in every region by SCE is released to every region, maximising income from the same product.

The fact that the PS3 and PSP are supposed to be knit together tightly may also be part of the decision. It'd be kinda weird having one region coded while the other not. By the way, didn't one post this piece of news a while back? I remember losing it over this news.

Well then they shouldn't complain when people imprt Japanese machine to Europe, knowing that the games will work anyway!!!
With PSP they made such big noise for that, telling people that "future games might be region coded and not work" just because people were importing PSP's from Hong Kong for a much lower price than the UK version!

Movies are still probably going to be area coded so Importing from Japan is not an option for me, my japanese is not very strong

I don't actually think they would know much about this. They seem to be in the dark for many things that come up on here.
Either that or they're both very good actors!

I thought that was explained by Deano? They ask questions about where we heard stuff, because if it's public then they can talk about it. Hence when we say 'RSX has a companion REYES processor attached' and nAo/Deano asks 'where'd you hear that?' they're really saying 'link to an official report and we'll discuss it in all it's technical glory' and not 'what crazy people do you hang out with; you ain't got a clue mate!'
