Nintendo Switch Revelation

Curiouser and curiouser...

Nintendo continued: "The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."

So the dock has no real functionality? It's just a charging station with some Video IN/OUT connectors (I imagine HDMI out to TV, but input could be anything else?).

Neat idea having each half of the controller be a separate controller for 2 players.

I thought so too at first until I realize the issue that it presents. If u want a single control scheme that works for both single player and multiplayer for your typical 3D game, then u have to switch aiming/movement to the opposite sticks.

I guess if they release goldeneye on the switch, it provide added nostalgia.

I wasn't. Then you'd have 720P home games, 540P on the handheld, or something stupid.

Sounds like that was born out of another "it's secretly powerful" forum angle for a Nintendo console.

There's really nothing on nvidia's website except for saying they spent 500 man-years in it.

U had those but u had others who thought that nx was a design that more tightly coupled Nintendo's console with its handheld. Just greater synergy between two different devices.

The big issue for me now is the software not the hardware.

The rumored specs of this thing definitely signals to me that Nintendo has officially given up on having a machine that has the latest console games from 3rd party developers. If this thing is weaker than an Xbox One and is launching in between Sony and Microsoft's new "4K consoles" then there is little hope for it in terms of running the latest console games outside of indies...even ports of Xbox One/PS4 games seem remote.

The danger here is Nintendo has basically become a system to just play Nintendo games. How many people are only looking for that or willing to buy a second console and at what price? I'm betting no more than $200-$250 tops.

Wii U has sold like what 10 million units? In 4 years...

Yes the hardware looks much better and more innovative than Wii U but I willing to bet that Wii U install base is telling of where the appetite for a Nintendo only/second console ownership market is.

It will probably sell like hot cakes at first but will the demand be there over time?

At least this thing will have the mobile games and the console games so nintendo doesn't have to support 2 platforms. They can have more first and 2nd party games this way compared to previous gens. They will probably get some third party support for people who want to port to mobile and the Switch but I imagine the long run it will be it's own ecosystem without cross platform games.

On the plus side:

You've probably got (significantly?) more power than the Wii U (what was the Wii U's bandwidth setup?). You've got 4GB of RAM vs 1.5 GB.

You now no longer have a goofy nonstandard controller like the Wii and Wii U (speaking of the home console controller shown in the video, anyway). This will help in that it doesn't actively push away the core anymore.

Just on that, it's the most attractive Nintendo console to me personally in 3 generations.

Wii-u had EDRAM which it could leverage for more bandwidth. Although the Switch will likely have more base bandwidth, the actual numbers aren't going to be better than the Wii-u when EDRAM is used. Also 4GB of ram will probably go down to 2.5 - 3GB once the OS gets it's cut. All in all, I actually don't think the performance advantage for the Switch is much to write home about considering the starting point was the Wii-u. It would be a miracle for developers to even reach 1/3 the performance of an Xbox One on the Switch with those bandwidth numbers.

I still don't see the point.
Generally, core gamers want cutting edge technology that can play most modern third party games + whatever 1sr party stuff that wets their apetite. They don't care much about playing on the go.
Meanwhile, the portable-games audience wants cheap. And a majority of them are children.
This seems tobnot service either. Too weak for the former, too expensive for the latter.
Those who want a premium portable that can play core games (sort of) have been proved to be a small niche by the psvita.
Maybe the consolidation of all software efforts from console and portable into a single platform might give it enough extra market strength to be moderately successful, but I'm not holding my breath...

If you look at the games developed for Shield TV it's basically 360/PS3 level stuff in terms of graphics. So that's what I'd expect or maybe a little better.

yeah it reminds me of these hybrid laptop/tablet's...trying to be a laptop and a tablet but not really the best of either.

This is going to be an extra large gaming handheld with probably poor battery life yet also a "under-powered console"...

Its not for core gamers.

This is more a replacement imo for the 3DS. The functionality of using it on a tv is just a cheap side benefit for Nintendo.

Nintendo knows they can't out spend MS and Sony in R&D. So why compete with them for core gamers. But core gamers want something nice to play on the go . This thing looks better than the vita ever did in so far as bringing the core experience to mobile and you know Nintendo knows how to make good mobile games.

THe real question is price. $200 and its a great companion to an xbox or playstation. $300 and it might be a bit to expensive to catch on.

How is it better than the 3ds? By being huge, more complicated and more expensive? Isn't the audience of 3ds kids? Does this looks like something a parent would by his kid?

The audience of the 3ds seem to be 25 yo kids more than actual kids from what I seen. Kids like ipads more than anything nintendo has mad it a long time.
