Nintendo says next console may be ready at E3

TOKYO, May 27 (Reuters) - Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday it may be able to display its next-generation game console that will be the successor to its GameCube machine at next year's E3 video game industry trade show.
Nintendo told reporters at a briefing in Osaka that it would like to debut the machine at the game industry's premier event, which is usually held in May.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata promised at this year's E3, held earlier this month, that Nintendo's next-generation console would create a "gaming revolution", since it would redefine how people play video games.

Nintendo admits it will use the showcase event to reveal its gameplay 'revolution'...

Nintendo's successor to the GameCube will be shown off at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in May 2005, the Kyoto-based company revealed this morning.

On recent form, the company could well be looking to showcase the console at the event with a view to launching the machine in Japan time for Christmas 2005, with a Spring launch for the US and an early summer launch for the rest of the world. At this stage, though, the firm will be keeping its options open and is more likely to hold back until 2006 before it launches, especially with the usual production capacity issues inherent with new consoles.

On the other hand, with the firm's current strategy of quick launches - case in point being the DS - there's a small chance that the company will once again be using E3 as a springboard for getting the product into the public's consciousness quickly, and any such strategy of this nature would almost certainly give the company a chance to steal a march on its rivals in the next round of console launches.

At E3, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata promised that its next machine would provide an innovative 'gameplay revolution', while yesterday senior managing director Yoshihiro Mori said, "Rather than offering a new edition of the same thing, we want to offer new ways of game playing." He refused to reveal any details on pricing or drop clues as to its design.

Meanwhile the firm also revealed a 3.5 million production target for the DS, and a 14 million ship target for the GBA (down from 17.6 million) in the current financial year to March 31st 2005.

This is interesting..
MS is also about to show XBox2 at E3 2005. What could a showing in E3 2005 for Nintendo mean?? Could it mean that N5 will be released earlier than anticipated?

Here's the pdf of Nintendo financial statements of this year (fiscal).

There's all the information about their results and their plans.
To summarize it, they did 33,2 billions Yen of profit (67,3B yens the previous year), they couldn't reach their goal of shipping 6M GC last year (with the new price), they actually shipped 5,03M GC, and they want to ship 4,5M GC for this year.
They also plans to ship 14M GBA (17,6M were shipped last year).

About the new handheld they plans to ship 3,5M of DS this year (Sony plan to ship 3M of PSP).

That's impossible. Deadmeat has already confirmed months ago that development of N5 was cancelled.

Obviously, this is all lies! Yamaushi - who we all know is the guy who's REALLY running the show has told us, no more consoles from Nintendo.

I don't think it's very telling. For all the systems, whether they're showing up in 2005 or 2006, they WILL be showing themselves off at E3 2005. Can't let everyone else get a leg up, and since there's probably a window of under a year in which all of the consoles will launching, putting off looks at their console would be detrimental if their competitors are lauding it. Let everyone get excited about them all at the same time. ^_^ (In fact, at that point there won't be a lot of numbers to chew on--gamers and press alike will be comparing the games and demos shown.)

Until then, though, all "revolutionary" comments are simply going to make my eyes roll. :p

What if Microsoft and Nintendo are collaborating on the SAME console? :devilish:

I´m expecting something similar to GCN´s unveiling. Project "Killer whale" announced in 2005, with some numbers regarding CPU, manufacturing process and not much else. The machine will unveiled late 2005, and finally, the full blown game showing at E3 2006.

Not so surprising news. Perrin Kaplan said in an IGN interview at E3 that the next-gen console (Codename: Revolution btw) will be present at the next E3. Moreover, she mentioned that we're going to see another new Nintendo peripheral this year.
