Nintendo nets double the dough

Damn. No matter how you slice it, more than doubling your profit year-over-year is amazing.

If I earn $25 profit one year, and more than $50 profit the next year, then is doubling my profit amazing?

Despite what you say, more than doubling your profit year-over-year is not always amazing.

Anyway, Nintendo's increased profit isn't that amazing given the success of the DS...

Gamecube sales down 21%? I thought it was going fine.

They are since they're making a profit on hardware. ;)

To the less informed, a profit is a profit, and that's all that matters.

To those who actually consider long term consequences and outside influences though, many things matter - for instance, how their brand is going, long term influences, whether more money can be made through simple cash investment, etc.

Nintendo is making money hand over fist through their handheld business, but is struggling to make a worthwhile profit with their console business, and has lost massive marketshare and brand recognition there. No wonder they're concentrating on the DS atm.

That depends on your situation and wether or not $50 is worth the equivalent of $806 million where you live :)

Doubling profits might not always be amazing but its pretty great in this instance AFAICS. People keep saying they're profits are going down, plus this is the year they've started fending off Sony in the handheld market. Yet this years profits are higher then any of the last 8 years (at least).

That in itself is amazing IMO :)

you have to assume that the majority of that profit stems from their franchises outside of the Gamecube. They simply don't sell enough cubes or titles to net that much profit. Although, they are probably very efficient with their Cube titles. The ones they do release typically sell well and are usually 'A' titles.

The GCN is starting to slow down for two simple reasons, lack of new must have GCN games and the closing this console generation. Again the GCN is doing fine just not great. They're still making a profit on hardware and they're still selling a good number of units. Considering that Revolution is about a year away and backwards compatible, it makes sense that they move the majority of their development over to that instead. Also considering Revolution will be last, it makes much more sense to have a very good launch lineup to fight the multitude of titles from MS and SONY.

So why does Sony have so many games coming out for the PS2? There next-gen launch is closer so going by your quote Sony really shouldn't have anything coming out this here.

Didn't you or somebody post about SONY launching with 30 titles?

Yep that was me. But Sony won't be launching 30 titles the PS3 will. And thats the launch window, not first day. Sony could have 6, EA could have 6, others could have 6, and 12 can be ports from the X360 and PC.
