Ninja Theory's new game: Enslaved

Very nice. It keeps looking better every time it's shown. First reveal was eh, E3 showing was promising, and this one really makes me want to play it.

Did I see per-pixel motion blur there?

Bah... I can't watch YouTube from China. Does it show regular grunt fight or a mini boss fight ? Grunt fight is where Heavenly Sword needed a boost.

what the...no YouTube?

what's up in China, I hope for you that you are just visiting?
(Was in Beijing for one week...was enough if you ask me!)

Regarding the vid: it was grunt fighting! But it was a cool mix of martial art stuff (can't tell if the neat slow mo attacks are really in the game), and shooting (it seems that he can shoot blasts with his combat staff)!

he can also mount machine guns, giving indeed a somewhat Gears feeling!

The few glimpses I could see showed that combat could be interesting in the sense that it is not button mashing but rather kind of strategic with blocking...but I have to try it first to give final judgment of course!

Platforming seems to be cool as well!!

With respect to graphics: I am impressed with the amount of detail - it seems very alive to me with an art style resembling Uncharted....there is even a scene where Monkey climbs around which gave me an instant Uncharted 2 opening scene feeling...

So all in all, the game is up to now high on my list of must buys...let's see how the final game turns out and if the can improve the length of the campaign mode compared to Heavenly Sword!

The combat engine is shown at 1:05. That does not look good to me. Certainly no where near Bayonetta levels or lower tiers like NG and GoW stuff.

Travelling. Dealing with daily chore and traffic is emmm.... an interesting challenge here. Air pollution is a huge problem (I asked the driver if it was real fog >_<). I love some parts of Beijing at the moment. I came here partly to train my brat. He was getting extremely lazy, noisy, uncooperative, unappreciative, and addicted to (casual) gaming. The new environment in China rebooted some of his bad habits. We have been walking miles every day; forced him to climb the great wall with steps 1/3 his height. If I did this in US, I'd probably be visited by police and social workers :^P. I think he's more used to hardship now (muahaha). I do lead the family like a military op sometime. :devilish:

Also brought my wife to see some Chinese doctor for her back problem. The Chiropractors in US (including those in Stanford Medical) didn't make much progress.

It's the first time we travel together to China. I kinda miss the KTV girls when I travel with business partners... XD.

From RobertR1's short note, it seems like the combat lacks drama and rich moves ?

I love NG but for me bayonetta's combat is better.

Out of the action games I have played this gen, I'd rate them as following for combat: bayonetta>ng>xmen: wolverine>gow>heavenly sword

I hope they don't make the combat overly difficult/technical like Bayonetta and NG though. I won't buy 'em. GoW and DMC are interesting and intense enough. Alternatively, Demon's Souls style combat will also be welcomed. I hear the fighting in Nier is rather innovative too.

I pretty much agree with RobertR1's ranking.

Bayonetta is not overly difficult, but it is deep. There is a difficulty level for just about every level of gamer even down to 1-button combat.

The difficulty may stem from the level and enemy design, other than the mechanics. I played the demo, I can see how some enemies will demand select technique/combo and good timing (e.g. witch time) to fight properly.

Witch Time is a crutch to help you learn the combat. The real game (on climax) has no witch time and relies on a whole different technique. Bayonetta is meant to be played on Climax. The lower tiers are there to help you learn the combat engine. With each increased difficulty, you lose an aide until you're finally playing the game the way it's meant to be.

Bayonetta, like every other action game, doesn't bind weapons/techniques to enemies. It's the main reason it's so well regarded actually!

I dunno. I remember the demo and some review highlighted the need to master Witch Time in the game (against advanced enemies). I remember I didn't beat the demo boss. The ability to move and fight on any wall is cool though.

I can imagine!! Maybe you can go to the KTV with you wife instead?

This is an interesting ranking...but you should also judge the impact of the moves, which for me counts as well in combat (it may not be a combo move list or a deep fighting system, but it fundamentally increases satisfaction when using the move or action and feeling the impact), and that is IMO where GOW series blows them all out of the water, with GOW III being the master - I just love it when you take out 3 cyclops without them having a glimpse of a chance ever hitting you and finishing them off...this is how I like my combat!!!

With respect to Heavenly Sword: I love how you can intercept each of your moves, how you can interupt every animation and combo...making it fundamentally cool for me to fight bosses and standard foes as they simple don't have a chance against you when using the interception!

I wonder how Monkey's moves impact the enemies and if you can still intercept your combos...

No, NG is insane, 60fps, blisteringly fast, it's by far the fastest action game I've played.

Bayonetta is nowhere near as hard as NG, Team Ninja are experienced fighting game developers and the depth in their DOA titles carries over to NG.

it may be true...but in my case: I played NG and NG Sigma...the only thing that makes NG series difficult and complex...is the camera, and nothing else IMO!

As I had to battle the camera all the time, the game got difficult...I did not bought NG2 or NG2 Sigma, as the reviews clearly stated that the problem with the cam is still there...and this is simple just a "no thanks" for me (I wonder why the cannot get this fundamental part of the game mechanics right?) There is IMO just no challenge in getting stabbed in the back due to the camera flipping around don't giving you a chance to see all the foes...

The camera in HS was good, so I expect that the camera in Enslaved is good as well, but I am certainly listen to the reviews if they state some negative stuff about the camera in this game!

Same boat here. The basic combat system is good, but the content in the game and the camera makes it a stinker. The first level in the village is cool, but it already starts falling apart on the zeppelin with the magic infinite respawns and the archers at the hang rope. Anything past the point where they introduce explosive arrows in the second part of the city is plain not worth playing anymore IMO.

It's mostly a showcase of how effective personality-centric marketing can be.

Untrue...I am one of those people who spent countless hours playing each & every iteration of Ninja Gaiden (on every difficulty setting) and honestly the camera issue is a very very minor nuisance...all it takes is one button to reset the camera behind you...it isn't even half as big of a problem as its advocated.

The difficulty comes from the enemies who actively block & attack at each chance they get, its brutal like Demon's Souls where one wrong move means losing a major chunk of health. Sometimes its hard due to the cheapness like projectile spam in NG2, but that game is still nowhere near as hard as NG Black & that game didn't had cheap projectile spamming like NG2. The only game which I ever found to be even nearly as challenging as NG Black was DMC3 & even that game had many enemies which were slow & let you hit them.

I will always rate it like this DMC=NG > Bayonetta > GOW >>>Heavenly Sword

P.S.[Nothing like clearing a horde of enemies with Lunar's 360 or Scythe's ultimate technique :p]

They will only respawn when you get back to an area & not all area will have respawning enemies.
Also you are required to shoot the archers before you cross using the hang rope, there's just two of them & you already have the bow by then...I'm surprised that you mentioned such thing as a game flaw & not your own. Majority of the game is spent killing fiends who don't use incendiary shuriken, rocket launchers or any explosives.

Yeah, I know that there are you hardcore guys out there...but you can find them for every game available!

If you have no problem with the camera...good for you! honestly, because I liked the game a lot and would have loved to see more of it! But, the camera for me is just annoying as hell, until to the point where I cannot enjoy gaming anymore...and at the end, this should be the purpose of a game...

I really want ot see how you guys play the game to be honest, when I was playing I found out that it is rather easy to do the wall jump attack - enemies did not have a chance against this attack, but on the other hand, the attack bored me after a couple of times.

Do you really use straight standard fighting in NG, or do you use some weird wall, or jump or soemthing else attack?

For me a fighting game has the right combat balance, when your "standard" attack are effective...master them and you are unbeatable - this is at least what happens in GOW series and what I like about its combat!
