News & Rumours: Playstation 4/ Orbis *spin*

Apple TV with its own apps is not going to be competing with Xbox/Sony, core gamers are not going to care about 1 dollar games using their iPad as remote control. It might create a new market or steal some of the old Wii market but in general it wont threaten the console business

In order for Apple to compete, they would need real games, design a controller, ship the device with a harddrive. Basically meaning getting into the console business for real wich is unlikely

There are plenty of threads for discussing rival platforms. I suggest we postpone rumour talk until after tonight. then we'll either know everything and won't need any open rumour threads, or we'll know which rumours we need to discuss still. ;)

But they're not getting it. ;) They're getting an APU. the hardware isn't hideously expensive and there's little need to sell it at a massive loss, certainly not for any length of time. The hardware can be profitable. The software is. The content is. I don't think a yearly fee is the way to best generate profits, just as I don't think $800 consoles with $40 subsidised games would be, or a $200 console with $100 games. Subscription fees will work, and the console die hards will buy into them, but there'll be others who turn their nose up. I just don't think its necessary or comparable to other services.

Nah. As I say, I can buy a midrange PC now that'll be better spec'd. Next year I'll be able to buy better hardware without breaking the bank. That's a new position for consoles, not launching with cutting edge tech and room to keep up with the best of the PC for a few years.

I'm not going to discuss PC versus console any more. Suffice to say, I see more reason to consider PC now than ever before. In my thread comparing platforms, one of the most significant costs to switching to PC was sociable gaming. If that takes a nose-dive on consoles (less local-coop and paid online), that's going to greatly change the platform landscape in my eyes.

But that's a big If. Maybe in a few hours we'll learn one way or another?

Very big if indeed. Local multiplayer is going to stay important on consoles.

Well there are only a dozen to two dozen games which can get "blockbuster" sales at $60.

It's not clear the $60 per game business model will be sustaining for hundreds of console games.

Does every $60 game need to sell 5million copies to be profitable?

I'd bet many games make a profit on less.

So if the box hits at a retail cost of like $420, how bad would it be for Sony?

No idea as we have no real idea of the cost. Unless there's some surprises when Microsoft does a console reveal, I think it's quite likely that Orbis is going to cost a fair bit more to manufacture.

Heck, just the DS3 is going to be more expensive than the Durango controller unless MS have also made some changes to their controller.

SB

They will be ordering in bulk, id say <100

You think AMD and Nvidia don't order in bulk? Ordering double what they do isn't going to get you to half the cost.

Not that I have current priced for 4Mbit gddr5, but I doubt margins on it are that high that a big discount for huge volume will be in the offing.

Next Gen Eye specs look pretty good. Surprised they're using a dedicated port for it instead of USB3, however.

Two 1280x800 sensors, 60fps, and what looks like a pretty decent f stop. Video chat should be pretty good.

Also glad to hear about the improved sticks and multi-tasking support.

I'm wondering how recently they decided to make this change. I doubt current dev kits were designed for the retail unit to have 8GB GDDR5 RAM (meaning the dev kit itself would have even more RAM).
