It seems that way, unfortunately. Sony is using the same strategy against 360 as they did against the Dreamcast. Namely, convince people that the competition is inferior technology, and that their own system is so much more advanced, it's a fundamentally different type of machine.
Irksome? Maybe. Accurate? Maybe that, too.
I'm a little worried about 360 right now. All of the in-game footage I've seen so far has left me rubbing my eyes and wondering, "Is this 360, or just a really, really nice-looking Xbox game?"
There's these screens, plus the Test Drive game footage I saw on G4 a few weeks back. Then there's the rolling video I saw at Gamestop last week, in which I saw trailers for Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and a few other titles.
This stuff doesn't look appreciably better than Doom3, FarCry, Half-Life 2, or Riddick - games I played on PC last year. Watching those videos, I felt alarmed - and then disappointed. As someone who's played and loved games since they first hit the market, I honestly felt a little rattled.
And you know what? I haven't yet seen a 360 game in motion that looks better than Wreckless - a (drop-dead gorgeous) first-generation Xbox game.
Now, I've heard all about the underpowered alpha kits - but that doesn't make me feel any better when so much of the footage Microsoft is using to promote its new system is so underwhelming.
Believe me, I cringe at the phrase "Xbox 1.5" too - but I worry there's something to it.
