New SpeedTree Demo

The demo won't start for me either. I'm running a 6800 GT with the 66.00 drivers and DirectX 9c and it gives me the can't initialize D3D error.

I guess I may have find the resason. Did you install a dx9c beta a time ago? I did and had to change a few things and installed a few seperate files and change something in the registery or msconfig.

I think both shadermark2.1 and Speedtree using the newest final dx9c runtimes and because of the changes made in the reg and msconfig earlier, dx9c cann't be overwritten to the final. So we have to undo these changes to make it to dx9c final. If only I can find what I did that time....

edit, this was what I did and this probably ruind my dx9:

The next step is the most difficult, you need to now install DirectX9.0c.

I have taken the liberty of hosting all the files you will need, so download this file and unzip it someware you will rembmer.

http://glowstickinsightbb.shackspace.com/dx9ckit.rar

The first step is you have to boot into safe mode. To do this, go to Start -> Run, then type in 'msconfig' and hit Enter

Next, go to the boot.ini Tab, and click on /SAFEBOOT
Click on 'OK' then it will ask you if you want to reboot your computer, choose Reboot.

Now you should be in safe mode, locate the files you unrared from the dx9ckit.rar folder and run the programs in this order.

DX-9.0c.exe
DX9.0c_hotfix.exe
dx9c_regfix.reg

Next, go back into 'msconfig' and uncheck the /SAFEBOOT, when it asks you to reboot, do so. When you boot windows normaly, run dxdiag to make sure your Direct X Version is Direct X 9.0c. If it is you installed it correctly!

Does someone know how I can get rid of this and get the latest dx9c installed, besides dooing a fresh install of XP?

Btw did you guys know that Pangaea was the mother continent, before the continents splitt up.

I guess there is no way to uninstall dx9(c)? or does those dx9 uninstallers work?

"Un"installing DX9 like you uninstall other software never worked i think.
The trick is to let Windows assume there is an older DX version installed than in fact is. (it's just some registry entries that have to be changed IIRC)
Then you can install any DX version again, even downgrade from DX9 to DX7 etc....

It was pretty but I wasn't THAT impressed with it. The skybox is just a quick TG render, low res at that. But maybe I'm being unfair, as it is meant as a tree demo.

Some of the branches apeared to not be lit, and were full bright. The bumpmapping was present but nothing out of the ordinary. I would of been more impressed with paralax mapping for rough deep cut bark! I didn't see any hint of fog in the demo at all, while the terrain was a little. This produced a not-too-pleasing-to-look-at effect on the trees far away. Many of the blades of grass were floating several inches above the ground, although this might just be sloppy work rather than tecnical bug. But I doubt it, I don't think they were hand-placed. The trees didn't move in a realistic way. The trees in 3DMark01's nature scene moved in a way nicer fashion IMHO, although it did have far less of them.

Pretty, and probably useful for ordinary games, but certainly not cutting edge as it's mentioned on the site. That of course is just my opinion.

A nice but mostly uneventful technology demostration. Certainly nothing eye-popping in comparison to the GeForce 6800 series release demos.

I noticed major problems with LODs when running this on a 6800 Ultra with the official 61.77 Forceware drivers. In Prairie Meadow there is a fireplace with chimney. This chimney looks almost like a hollowed out tree trunk on first inspection. The LOD makes it a blurry soup until you view it at the right angles. Once you are at the 'correct' angle it will become very sharp and detailed.

I only mention this because I have been reading a post reagarding something similar here: texture shimmering on 6800 GT even w/ optimizations disabled

It seems there are some issues with the 61.77 drivers and 6800 cards. It can be quite annoying, but it seems this problem is not always exposed.

Does this demo require dx9.0c???

"Could not intialize Direct3d. blah blah... latest version of DirectX ... blah blah"

???

Directly from their website at the download link: *Trees of Pangaea requires the recently released DirectX 9.0c (download runtimes or the SDK)

I was largely unimpressed by this demo. Some textures were point sampled. Bumpmaps apparently DXT1 compressed, with all the ugly artifacts involved. Popping LOD. Visible lines in the where vegetation ends that follows you around like the mipmap line would when you have a bilinear texture filter. Plenty of aliasing in the scene.

I think this demo will do more harm to speedTrees PR than good, what developers will think of it I don't know.

There was another demo of speed tree in the Unreal engine which was fantastic, why they didn't just exapnd on that I don't know. Well I think it was a demo for speeed tree at anyrate.
