New Generation Graphics, Realistic or Artistic?

With the upcoming next generation consoles coming our way in about 2 years, we will see amazing graphics while gaming. But what route do you think many developers will go for, realistic graphics or artistic graphics. I personally thought that too many devs focused on making things so real, be it graphics, ai, or sound, that this generations games has not been very "fun". Take ICO for example, you hear many people saying that this is one of the best looking games on ps2, but it's not because it looks real, but because the artistic approach the devs took.

So what do you think the trend will be next generation?

both. although given the degree of artists that work on this field the artistic route will allow titles to distinguishe themselves among each other.

still realistic, the limit hasn't been reached, when it does, they'll have to look for other ways to promote their games

well, 2 or 3 years, actually.

I have a tough time believing that PS3, GC2 and XBox2 will all be out in fall 2005, but its not impossible.

A mix of both - Who thought cell-shaded games would be that fun and people would get used to it. Zelda, XIII, Hulk etc.

More power just means artists have a lot more freedom and hopefully it'll bring both realistic graphics while keeping the fantasy, cartoony, cellshading, etc in the mix.

I'm all for realistic though :)

Speng.

A realistic Zelda ^^
But with an extremely dark story/characters :)

Link should have new powers like the triforce (you should be able to use it) magic, diving, ...

I am curious how they will do the underwater effects ^^

I hope someone will be able to create anime style graphics (graphics of ZOE2, naruto,... aren't there yet...)

Doesn't fit the game. Really, really doesn't fit it.

Link should have new powers like the triforce (you should be able to use it) magic, diving, ...

The Triforce == the ultimate power of the entire Zelda universe. If Link could USE it, he wouldn't even have to do any fighting, he could just say "OK, I wish Ganon would... keel over and die. Right now." And it would happen.

your scarying me now.........

really, i'm utterly amazed by the beauty of SH3 running on little old PS2. and while playing i was thinking: "oh god this is going to look like SH1 in 2-3 years time compared to a next gen silent hill game"...

think about it...

Well with each gen we are going to see smaller and smaller increases in graphics. To the point that for a long stretch of time you will prob think computers stoped getting faster.

Really. Will you be able to see a diffrence between a 6 million polygon char and a 5.5 million polgon char ? The jump from a 100-1k was big. But the jumps are going to look smaller and smaller even if they start increasing in size.

well frankly no (with proper LOD). but thats assuming static (SH3) type scenarios. with FPS's we haven't hit the ceiling of falling returns for geometry so I'm optimistic on that front.

next next next gen is where I'm hoping we come up with new interfaces adn the 2D output is dropped in favour of something more imersive.

well of course u're not probably gonna see the difference between 6million and 5.5million. but that's not exactly the difference between 2 generations of consoles. generation jumps go from 300 to 30000 to, i guestimate, 300000 polygons per characters.

and one day, when there wont be any more room to put polygons, when a character has 8billions polygons on him, the extra power next generations will provide will be used to make this character move more realistically. make the clothes move and look more realistic. make the hair look and move more realistically. things like that. the extra polygona will also be used for the environments, where, to achive real photorealism, u need a whole lot, much more than even ps5 will be able to push in my own opinion. that is, if ps5 keeps using polygons as rendering method, which i'm not exactly confident about...

I also disagree for the foreseeable future (eg. lets talk again around 2010 about display technology).

I don't think i'll be surprised with the so-called next generation graphics, it will be at most running at higher resolutions, higher polygon counts and has graphic quality comparable to those pixar movies.

I'm only curious how developers are going to improve "smoke" effects. I'm sure most of you would have realised that the smoke effects in today's most graphic intensive games is actually just 2d sprites. It's like pieces of paper floating in the 3d environment. I'm wondering how is this effect is going to improve.
