Naughty dog and Insomniac are making a joint game for the PS3

"In a recent interview leading up to the Vegas Dice summit. Jason Rubin CEO of Naughtydog talked with G-tv about the future of PS2, GCN, and Xbox--what the next generation will bring and just how close Insomniac and Naughtydog really are."

J.Rubin - The Jak & Daxter's legacy will unfold on the PS2, but it will not end there. Naughtydog and Insomniac are hard at work on the most mind blowing gaming experience of all time for the PS3. I really can't comment anymore on the subject matter, other than-- Being on board with Sony has opened up a great door for us at Naughtydog and the talented guys over at Insomniac, we have grown really close as developers and share the same idea's and goal's in video games. With that said we are set to show the next generation console owners just what can be accomplished in a videogame.

They went on to ask him if it was infact a J&D-R&C game, but he came back with "wait and see."

Seen what they made PS2 do technically, i'm really looking forward to see what they can come up with, although Jason Rubin has been talking about the fact that after a certain level, graphics becomes unimportant, saying that new gameplay ideas need to be invented and exploited.
Very interesting to see what they will come up with, both technically and gameplay-wise.

Just speculating but i would guess that artwork etz has begun but don´t they need Devkit´s too start coding.

I guess they're still designing and making up ideas. Maybe coding and trying demos on emulation although i don't see the point of that...

They could design high-level code even now, as I'm sure PS3 dev-kit will have a C++ compiler included, etc. Start on basic engine and AI work, etc. Besides, companies like Naughty Dog are certain to be amongst the very first to be given intimate detalis of the new hardware, much like Factor 5 was during Gamecube development.

Likely, they have full knowledge of the hardware design already, even though details such as final clock speeds and memory capacity etc might yet have to be decided.

After seeing what beautiful things JAK2 is doing, my brain just can't compute how a next-gen NaughtyDog+Insomniac game will be like... Thinking of FFTSW makes me depressed because of how underwhelming it was.

I mean something that gets close to Pixar level of animation, being fully interactive, more so than JAK2/R&C2.... My brain just can't calculate this! I have to see it!

Let's hope, they manage to combine their strong sides (ND's engine and animation, Insomniac's polish, both are great in creating fun gameplay) and eliminate the few weak ones, like the tearing in Jak2 or the little, tiny sluggishness in R&C2 handling.

In addition to those aspects of a game, I believe they could also start creating some character models if Sony has given them some rough quantitative estimates of the polygon throughput of the PS3 ..

This is really funny to me because for the longest time I thought they were the same developer and couldn't tell the difference between R&C and J&D.

They just have an air of similarity about them.. lol.

Hehe... Well, officially they just shared technologies. Whatever that means. Basically, how Jason Rubin put it, when one, say ND found a trick, they would exchange it with Insomn for a trick that they found and vice versa... Therefore, although they do not admit of using the same engine, they will admit that their engine have some features and libraries that are the same, like the background renderer (if you notice, they both have very long draw distance with a lot of geometry on the backgrounds, because it's basically the same renderer). Some people will argue that they just use the same engine, but they just share technology. I think, after the distinction in JAK2 compared to R&C2, the latter seems more likely...
