Peter Moore responds as Solid Snake promotes power of Cell processor

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has pinned his colours firmly to Sony's mast in the next generation console battle, with a hugely impressive trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3 being presented at the Tokyo Game Show.

In typical tongue in cheek style, the Konami development star included a number of references to other games and platforms throughout the video, which was played at a large specially-constructed PS3 cinema on Sony's stand.

Drawing most raised eyebrows, however, was a comment from Solid Snake's geeky companion Otacon, a fixture of the series, who sends a robot to find the grizzled veteran and proudly announces that the 'bot is powered by the Cell Processor.

"Is it really necessary to bring it to the battlefield?" Snake asks in the trailer. "You're looking at the key to winning the console war," responds Otacon, while clips of the Rubber Duck and Killzone demos from E3 play on screen.

While the comment is certainly not representative of Konami's overall attitude - the company has committed to developing Winning Eleven / Pro Evolution Soccer for the Xbox 360 platform, and more titles may well follow - it certainly suggests that Kojima Productions has chosen to focus on the new Sony console.

However, it can hardly be described as a major blow to Microsoft to have the Metal Gear franchise leading out on the Sony platforms - given that it's always been seen as a PlayStation franchise anyway.

Xbox VP Peter Moore certainly doesn't seem perturbed by the MGS4 video - telling GamesIndustry.biz at TGS that "Cell processor or not, when I look at the technical specs, I don't see anything that concerns me overly from a performance point of view. Quite frankly, having the ability to move first in this space, I think, provides us with the opportunity for a huge advantage."

"If we look at the capabilities of the Xbox 360 from a technical aspect, and we lay against it the capabilities from a technical aspect of the PS3, everybody that works at a technical level that I respect says... It's a wash," he continued. "It really is. Both companies have incredibly powerful machines, and it will be about what the developers can do with them."

"Gamers are a very smart bunch, and gamers who still haven't seen a PS3 or seen one played, will make the determination. The English expression is, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. Having videos, having characters in videos... The fact that they feel the need to have Snake tell you that it's powerful, that could be seen as a sign of worry, or weakness, potentially," Moore concluded.

he seems a little worried to me :p

This bit don't make sense unless Sony requested it...

Why would Konami be worried about PS3's performance when their independant?

As always I think people are just being too serious. MGS4 is coming out for PS3, and with all the 'console war' PR nonsense it might well just be team that put together that demo thought it'd be a laugh to play it up.

I think Kojima just really likes the PS3CELL. He's always had a thing for tiny little details and those little details in bulk help flesh out his world and the CELL helps him do that. To me CELL seems like a perfect fit for Kojima's style of doing things.

By the way, he also seems to reference CELL in MGS Subsitence. A three disk set named Subsitence, Peresistence, and Extistence. SPE. What's that you say? A Kojima game with an acronym? NO, you don't say!!

I think Sony made them do that and the "Format Play Station" thing. I mean everyone went there knowing that Konami would be releasing a real time MGS4 video, and knowing that it would be for Playstation 3, and knowing that it would be powered by the Cell.

It seems very childish to be doing stuff like this and it goes in line with what Sony has been doing: "xbox 1.5" and such.

Konami is independent but they have close ties to Sony. I mean look at what they're giving Xbox 360 Rumble Roses XX?
For PS3 they've already announced MGS4, Gradius 6, and Suikoden V.

I highly doubt

Kojima usually has some sort of satire in his trailers/teasers. Look at the E3 teaser, he took a jab at Splinter Cell. Hes also made fun of Raiden and Solid Snake. Its his style and why would Sony make Kojima do anything?

Nah, it's childish only in the context of the kindergarten that are the console-related forums nowadays. In the real world it's just plain funny, I liked it :)

PS. It's also quite in line with MGS, another reference to the real wold around us and all. You know. Psychomantis at work ;)

Um, what else than a bunch of "we're not worried" BS is the guy supposed to say? He's a suit working for microsoft for chrissakes, is it even neccessary to create a topic for stuff like this? There used to be a PR thread for each console where it was mandatory to post shit like this, but I guess they slipped off the front page long ago...

Kojima believe in Cell architecture, and maybe the video of KZ at the end of trailer let me suppose that Kojima calculate to reach that result with MGS4 on final PS3

Oh please we all know Konami swings from Sony's b@lls(Along with 85% of all Japanese developers), were do you think they make 90% of their operating income from, it sure ain't Xbox or the PC I don't know one person that bought MGS2 for xbox. Use your head people.

IMO PC developers are the only ones not tottally biased because they need Sony and M$ both equally(well PS3 games will eventually sell more for the most part but Microshaft still has the PC market)

With that logic you could say that every single developer swings for the platform their developing for....

  • Square Enix Swings for Sony's B@lls
    Bioware Swings for Microsoft's B@lls
Nintendo Swings for their own B@lls
    EA Swings for everyones B@lls

Its not as clean cut as you like to make it, Kojima makes Playstation games...he ports over to Xbox to give some of the users their a taste of Metal Gear. He even sanctions a remake of the original Metal Gear to Gamecube (Named Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snake). Thats after ALOT of playstation fans bickered over why THEY wheren't getting the remake. I personally bought MGS:TTS for the Gamecube and thourougly enjoyed it.

So your opinion is that they swing for Sony's b@lls, my opinion is that Kojima satire is being blown out of proportion.

I know Kojima does plenty of inside jokes like this, like the whole "the frequency is on the back of the CD case" or how on the gamecube version of MGS there's a Yoshi and a Mario, but I think Sony held his hand and walked him across the line because saying something like "It's the key to the console war!" is going a bit to far, don't you think?

And not childish? "Lolz Xbox360? More like Xbox1.5!11" I mean sure when some guy on a forum says that it's stupid and overlooked, but when a rival company says that it's just plain childish. I know that's slightly out of context, but everyone seems to have taken it the wrong way and thinks the xbox360 is nothing more than a software upgrade when that's really not true at all, which in the end is what Sony wants the consumer to think...

It doesn't bother me that the PS3 is better than the 360. It bothers me that Sony had to rely on mud slinging to get that point across.

Well that was a leap.

It was a brief and pleasant bit of humor in a fairly dark game demo. Nothing more.

Did you see the whole conversation? They're tying it in that way because Snake is on a battlefield, in a warzone. "Why did you bring it on the battlefield?", "it's the key to the console war" etc. It's so very tongue-in-cheek, stop overanalysing it ;) I mean, did you miss the bit where the mark II gets into a flap and falls over just after Otacon boasts of it including a cell processor? He was taking the piss all over the place.

It might be a knowing joke, and it might be jabbing a little at cell's competitors, but it's very playful.

Are you saying that Konami is making rumble roses for X2? Is that true?

I highly doubt that Sony so much as even suggested the Cell joke to Kojima - because frankly, I think if they had, Kojima would not have included it. He strikes me as that kind of guy.

As soon as I saw that part I immediately thought of cell doing everything in floats rather than doubles and propogated error making the robot fall over. ;)

No, not another Dreamcast.

But this thread has gone downhill since the very beginning. Locked.
