Matrox Rumor Mongering

I heard through the grapevine that on Friday the entire design center in Florida was laid off. This was the design center responsible for Parhelia.

Of course, it was through the grapevine (friend of a friend who got laid off) so the info might not be correct at all.

it seems that news come here slower than I thought...

I heard this rumour on very first week of December that Florida design unit will be gone. And as far as I know, Matrox has deceased whole Parhelia II project. Instead of that, there's possiblity to see some higly specialized graphics cards for highly specialized market segments (or niche market if you want call it that way) based on Parhelia core. There also was another fixed version of Parhelia core coming, but being so late, I doubt it could change anything much. Before christmas it would have been pretty good step, but now 9500 series are already standing on better light on it's possible market segment. But that's all my IMO based on what I know / have heard.

So, practically, I think Matrox is gone. At least for now. so, for 3rd wheel on 3D HW carriage, Only possible company is S3 right now. So don't get your hopes up too high about good and competitive year 2003.

could be, but so far S3 is the only one showing that they have at least worst technical paper writers. Let's hope that they have used those additional writer outcomes to tech designing.

  :devilish: :!:  ;) =

Kyle of HardOCP, Please.
next time quote as well as the part where I state that "But that's all my IMO based on what I know / have heard."

just mentioning heard this rumour on very first week of December that Florida design unit will be gone. And as far as I know, Matrox has deceased whole Parhelia II project. could make it look as 100% sure news, which it isn't. (and yes :!: I am indicating that my words aren't some god damn law, okay? I want speculate as well the others based on the RUMOURS that I have heard. That does not mean that my words would be fool proof. And NO :!: I didn't say it would be 100% fact, as you can see from above.)

I guess the point of my information was not that "I had heard a rumor that martrox was going to close the florida office", my statement was that "I had heard from a friend of a friend (who was on the parhelia design team and is now looking for a job) that matrox had indeed closed the office and laid everybody off".

Looking at the matrox forums, it seems the info is being poo-pooh as an old rumor (which is irritating because its tentative confirmation of the old rumor, and not re-iteration of the same old rumor). But oh well, it either happened or it didn't. No skin off my back.

I asked Jon Peddie if the rumor about Matrox getting out of the graphics business was true and he told me no. He wouldn't ellaborate any further though. If there's anything happening at Matrox, it might just be changing their focus again. Never know with those canucks. :)

I think I've read at murc haig saying that everything was nice and dandy at matrox. Maybe he was putting icing on a spoiled cake?

Since Matrox was never really a strong contender in the mainstream gaming market, I can't say I'd be too disappointed if they decided to stop trying to make it there.

Yes less players in the 3D graphic industry is bad...

Matrox products are excellent, very very good IQ and reasonable performance (a Parhelia can outrun a Ti4600 in high rez and eye candy cranked)..

I have no idea what people expected from a little company probably the size of Nvidias cafeteria staff.

How exactly does this news relate to there being less players in the 3D graphics industry? As far as I can see there have been 2 players ever since 3DFX went under and ATi took over in opposition to Nvidia.

If Matrox went under or left the 3D graphics industry then you would be pleased ??

Thats nice, I don't agree at all..the more players the more competition, the more competition the faster tech advances and keeps prices compettive.
Lets give credit where credit is due..Matrox was the 1st with a hardware 256-bit bus and a new style FSAA that delivers good results.
I'm sorry saying that you are happy to see a good quality company leave PC graphics is just 'stupid'...there is no other word.

I wouldn't be pleased or displeased, since I honestly don't think it would affect me. They haven't been a dominant player in the PC graphics industry for many years, so their influence on the market lately has been negligable. Their absence would likewise have a negligable influence on the market.

That's true, but I don't see how this relates to Matrox, as they haven't been any competition to either NVIDIA or ATI.

They might have been the first with 256-bit memory by a month or so, but I hardly think that entitles them to receiving credit for the pushing the technology, as it's fairly obvious ATI was already planning on implementing it in their R300 products, regardless of what Matrox was doing. And I think one could successfully argue that Matrox's AA solution was created in response to their competitors' superior methods, not the other way around. I don't forsee the 16x FAA mode on the Parhelia causing NVIDIA or ATI to alter their plans for their FSAA capabilities.

Nobody said they would be happy if Matrox left. How did you manage to confuse apathy with happiness?
