Major Advancements in Computer Technology You Want to See

We are in the 21st Century now. We don't have flying cars, we don't have houses that are completely controlled by voice recognition and make our toast, coffee and fetch the paper for us, we don't have holograms, we don't have a colony on the moon or mars. So what century are we in again?

Back in the 20th century all these things were predicted to happen before the Millenium. Here it is after the fact and those things are still not true. While some of them may not be possible now, others may be. One thing that surely has advanced quickly is computers. It has taken off like no other... The problem is not everyone can get one or afford one at this time. But that is changing... Now they are becoming the everyday tool of society.

We need some kick ass technology changes now with computers, something that will make it look like we really are in the 21st century.

Here is my list:

1.) Holographic projection - I no longer want a monitor, I want my computer or a device connected to my computer to display a holographic image that you cannot see through. However, I do want the ability to change its level of translucency as well as its size. Wouldn't it be cool to have it fill the whole size of your wall, imagine gaming then. With this holographic nature things can now be displayed in either 2D, or true 3D. The beginning of interactive 3D holographic things :) Can you imagine the video card that will be needed to do that though? But we need to do it, it is time we start getting into holographics with computers.

2.) Voice recognition - Even if it is simple terms such as Computer On and Volume Up or Volume Down or Next Page or Back or Go To Website xxx.xxxx.xxx or Dial Phone Number etc... Voice recognition should be common place now with computers. It should be so good that it will know what you are saying without having to be trained. It should be so good that it will understand you even if you are talking real fast.

3.) Video Communication - Audio communication is old 20th Century stuff. It is time we start seeing the people we talk to. Video Phones should be the standard with smooth real time video communication. Our computers should be able to use the holographic display to also act as a video camera when calling someone so it can both display them and show them us all from our computer.

Those are just a few, i got others but I will leave some room... What advancements in computers should we have now that we are in the 21th Century....

Bad idea. Video Phones are already available, but I sure as hell hope they don’t go mainstream. Picture this: I'm hung over and looking like a fucking mess, it's late in the evening but I haven't gotten out of bed yet, then my parents call. I wouldn't like my parents to see how I look in that situation. And even worse, over my shoulder they can see that the apartment looks like the epicentre of an earthquake after the wild party yesterday. “Who are all the people laying on the floor?â€￾ (And yes, we have had parties like that with up to 50 guests and the next day the floor is covered with a cm of mud/beer and people sleeping where ever they could find a small patch of free floor :) ). No, call me a bad person but I prefer an audio phone where I can lie and say that everything is fine and the reason my voice is so rough is that I got a slight cold.

Just for the record, normally I wouldn’t mind my parents knowing that I've had a party, but I still prefer them to not see the mess afterwards, especially if this party was on a normal weekday.

Just read an article on eetimes about 3d SoCs. I think that's going to be a revolution in the next few decades. I think the evolutionary path of shrinking process tech will slow down soon and 3d semiconductors will be the new paradigm.

I also see wearable computers becoming a reality. Like high resolution LCD glasses for monitors, pager sized wearable dumb terminal computers with gigs of ram connected to a wireless network. All programs are downloaded to the wearable pc. Personal files are saved locally on removable flash cards or something similar.

I remember reading an article somewhere early this year about the advances in voice recognition/reproduction. I don't remember the name of the company involved, but they were working on both recognition and translation as well.

Basically, they were saying that in the (near) future, you'll be able to have a device which can recognise what you are saying, translate it into a foreign language and then 'speak' it using your voice. The idea is that they have a recording of all the necessary phonemes from your voice and use these to recreate the other languages. I dare say this is a few years away yet and the translation etc. won't be perfect, but it does sound an interesting concept - Universal translator from Star Trek, anyone?

That sounds like a really intresting and useful idea! :)
My imagination is a bit more twisted...
Imagine a device that can display your thoughts... like when u enter there, it'll read your thoughts and make your dreams (ahem!) come true! Besides all that, you could also experience the Virtual Reality physically, instead of just emotionally...

Might be a bit of an exagerration, but still... :D

About the suggestions Brent brought up, I definetly agree with all of them, although Thowllly has a point there! :D

We have pretty decent voice recognition. The problem, as i see it, is in NATURAL SPEAKING voice recognition. IE, you shouldnt have to phrase things in some stilted command language - the computer should respond to natural language.
Example: Instead of saying "Computer....On" or "Volume...Up"
You should be able to talk to it naturally. "Computer, turn on and play that mp3 by frank zapaa, you know, the one with "titties" in the title. Oh yeah, bring up Word also, i need to send out a letter."

This is the big barrier to voice recognition, imo. We can have it recognize words, etc, thats easy, and is done pretty darn well right now. the problem is in the machines understanding of what you tell it :)

I don't know if I want to talk to my computer though. I thought in home automation, voice recognition( to turn things on and off) is already available.

yeah it is. but nothing understands natural speech yet.

What I'd wanna see is wireless power transfer... Or stuff that's self sufficient about power. That's the biggest thing I see preventing a totally wireless home, nowadays wireless stuff like PDA's, cell phones, laptops, everything, has a battery that needs to be loaded from time to time and during that time it's limited to the manouverability provided by the power cord.

Power to the machines I say :p

<edit: spelling>

Has anybody found any uses for quantum computing other than encryption-related (fast factoring, secure data channels) stuff yet?

Accurately simulating (part of) the universe by your own condition.

Hmmm ... a natural (or extremely UNnatural, depending on who you ask) next step up from voice communication would be direct brain-machine interfaces ...

I read the article.. Thats sooo cool!!! if you haven't read this you should!

Well I want to be able to be beamed anywhere just like in startrek no more long flights just beam me to Indonesia in a second ofcourse this is free(or something simulare what they used in ''forgot the name'' but the builders where called Talons)

Cure for all sickeness worldpiece

Finally a major jump in harddrives cause they are stuck on the same tech with no major improvements for ages already.......... data is now stored in small cubes(4 inches) filled with liquid supstance and can hold 10 yottabyte of data.

Addeptive software

build in bionics to enchance the human body and mind.
