MAG

So is MAG good or bad?

Reviews say not so good. Im on the fence. Any demo?

The demo was the open beta a few weeks back. And the reviews so far have been mostly based on that beta. They all say MAG is great, but only if proper teamwork is happening. That is a little hit and miss right now, but it can only get better when people are getting used to the game.

It's very good, but you have to be willing to play in a team. For some reason, a bunch of reviews came out before the servers were live, haha.

Ostepop, the basic game mechanic is very solid. I rate it higher than most other FPSes I tried (including KZ2, U2, R2, Socom, UT3). What's missing now is teamwork and strategies.

If you want quick fun, long kill streak and personal ratios, this game is probably not for you. But if you want to be part of a war action, then hop in and help Valor or Raven out. It will take patience to perfect your own moves, and also beat others into shape.

Most of the time, defense will win. People complain about SVER because attacking their bases are generally more difficult, especially the Domination map. In the beta, it's not just losing on the SVER map, my self-esteem got shredded into bits as well. You may not like the experience. :)

OTOH, when it's time for them to attack our bases, we get to beat them into submission too (but not as humiliating). Unlike SVER, you have to work/play hard for the victory. After my second day, I have only lost 1-2 defenses per night out of 10 or so defenses. I know I play more intensely and intently than in other FPSes though (Trying to create winning opportunities for comrades here).

If you managed to win in an attack, give yourself a good pat in the back.

EDIT: If you're a lone wolf like me (usually), there is a way to play it during defenses. Stay away from the objectives and snipe at enemies' flank or behind from far. When you do this, the enemies will send one or two soldiers to look for you. In which case, it becomes a cat and mouse game (e.g., Kill enough soldiers, move to new location where you can see/snipe your old location, wait for people to appear in the vaccinity, so on and so forth). This is usually effective when you have a clear view of the staircase leading to the objective room. At one point, I had 3 soldiers after my *ss in the bushes. Only lasted for a few seconds before they found me.

Reviews are good or "Generally favorable", but this type of game will take a long time time be properly judged, like an MMO. I can't see most reviewer even putting in the hours on the released version to say anything intelligent about it.

In some sense, the greatest weapon in MAG is not the guns. It's your brain. Other than the simple tricks people employ (e.g., claymore, ambush), you have to predict and deal with their next moves (e.g. flanking, baiting) and any adhoc happenings. That's why teamwork is crucial. Having the right tools is also essential. Otherwise, it can be difficult to clear an obstacle (e.g., bunker, choke point).

The duration of a battle is long (20 minutes ?). So you have ample time to try different tactics and counter opposing moves.

EDIT: Some GAF poster is saying SVER's official advantages are superior map layout, slightly more powerful weapons but dated technologies. So may be we can overcome their advantages later.

I think what you need to keep in mind for MAG on the bigger game types, ie 64 vs 64 and 128 vs 128, you are not the Hero. You have a job/task to do and if everybody does that then your side wins and you win.
I really got into that spirit yesterday playing Aq., my squads job was to take a bunker and AA battery, that was it, somebody else was tasked with mortar and cars and what not.
We got our objectives and when the cars an other squad stole came racing out of the gate we kept open over the bridge we keept fixing, I was "proud". And then we won :)

Currently there seems to be a lot of CoD players going around hunting, but when they run into a couple of guys working together they usually get pwnd.

Yes, but if they stay hidden, use claymores and move around, it can be frustrating to new players (to die on the way to the objectives). Best is to move with a squad since the medics can save you -- assuming they are not hit yet.

If playing as sniper, I think it's not a bad idea to spread them out. It's rather easy to take out a whole area of troops with explosives and poison gas.

EDIT:
We SVER beat Valor when attacking =)

Heh... only once ? ^_^

That was no other squad :p. Or at least the first car wasn't. I managed to sneak behind the enemy lines, taking down the sensor battery, 2 motor pools, the mortar, a gate, and finally escaped with the transport vehicle. That was made a lot easier by having the AA battery down. Letting me get to safety quickly. The teamwork was very good in that game. The squadleaders suggestion to start with the left bunker was the right one, and everyone followed that order perfectly. After that the remaining bunkers went down fast. We won that game very quickly.

Yeah, having a squad of friends is the easiest way to get some good teamwork going.

So what you are saying is that you disobeyed orders? Well its courtmartial next for you then!

Got the game ,looks like I won't play it until the day after tomorrow.
Yet to join a squad, immensely interested in Valor...so wanted to know how many people here with valor love ?

 Holy sh*t, that's quite a feat there Cornsnake. I find it hard to believe ! You need to show some video proof. :devilish:

Sounds like a fairy tale... in MAG !!!

Gah... I'm not sure if "pro" is the right word. You have the game now. You go and try to repeat his moves on the same map. In my view, it's closer to a miracle. XD

Well the opportunity kind of presented itself to me. I knew that the far left side of the base is often overlooked by both the defenders and attackers. That's also where the sensor battery is. Take that down and the enemy can no longer see you on the map as long as you don't run or fire. After that I was able walk around the base without running into any enemies. They were probably to busy fighting to secure the AA battery and destroying the bridge. It wasn't until the I went for the transport vehicle that I ran into an opponent. But he was shot down by a sniper through the just opened gate. And escaping with the transport again I got very little opposition. Only the bridge was out, but that can be avoided by going back over that overlooked left side.

This was one of my most played maps during the beta, so I knew the layout very well. It's always sweet to secure a transport vehicle. There are 64 attackers and only 2 vehicle's are needed, so it's not often you to get to do it.

Regardless of the luck or circumstantial elements that made it possible, it is an amazing achievement. I am jealous ! During the course of your adventure, you were always only 2-3 bullets from ending the streak (There were people spawning in your area all the time). Must be super exciting to execute. :)

Glad that you went with your gut there.

I will never play a match without my clanmates again. Just did one while I was waiting for them, it was sabo attackin SVERs A. That`s hard enough, but then there were two SVER guys with Raven accounts like "SVER_FOR_LIFE" teamkilling the whole squad at 1st spawn. Great start... then it was basically me against one squad of SVER players throughout the game. And they weren`t even great, a good team would have won. I armed A 4 times alone and took 24 enmies with me, got 213 points, second place was 77 - what a waste.

Still honing my skills in Supresion for now...Tried my hand using sniper....had a nice 14-0 in one round!...Loving the game, but trying to spread some love to ME2.
