Longhorn

I'm pretty excited about the 3D GUI interface for Longhorn. Once again, MS is changing things to keep us developers on our toes. Having developed several 3D winamp plugins I look forward to making similar things that can plug directly into the OS.

This will open up a whole new breed of applications. Whether they can pull it off, and people will use it is another matter. Slowing down the development of DirectX is a good thing, since it will give consumers a chance to catch up. Requiring a DX9 card to use the OS is nice, since developers will know most of the effects they make will be visible by everyone.

Can't wait.

K.I.L.E.R:

You never know when you are building a product how well recieved by the general public it will be.

I think it will be great to use the capabilities of our $400-600 video cards all the time, not just during a few gaming sessions. However if it turns out to be slower and harder to use than the current GUI it will just be a novelty feature rather than a revolution.

They may not get it right the first try. However I have no doubt that 3D will be used in future GUI's. We still have to catch up to that 3D unix system from Jurassic Park :)
