Linux and connecting to net

(9) i dont have my own IP adress.... Croatia doesnt have enough for everyone, i have dynamic IP with prefix to my ISP's IP that is different everytime i connect... i guess thats why i need DHCP?

If you don't have one, that's fine. In that case, DHCP will take care of it. And there's always dynamic DNS if you want to run your own webserver at home. ;)

thing is.... since i tried so many distros (SuSe, Mandrive, Knoppix, kubuntu) that during installation kubuntu reports that it is unable to start/setup/whatever DHCP.....
others dont report this, but act same....
and i know i was able to connect using Knoppix 3.8.1 live cd before....

i'll try everything suggested here.... but now i have some deadlines to meet and lots of work to do....

looking at all advices i decided to go one-by-one....modem had DHCP disabled.....
i guess thats where things got rough for me.....

i'll check if i can turn on DHCP on modem...
