Kinect user discussion thread

Thought I would start a thread here for us Kinect users who may want to post reviews or impressions on what they think of Kinect, its games & other non-game uses. I don't want to see a lot of chit chat from non-users, but understand they might be curious & have questions. Lets get the user feedback going first before we start tackling that. Also, please post all outside web site reviews of games in the Kinect Games thread. I just want our regular users feedback here.

BTW, people who visit my Kinect Games thread know I like to keep things on topic and Shifty isn't real gun shy about deleting or moving posts. Just keep that in mind. ;)

I've actually had mine since beta started on it. However today i got more games.

Pro tip . Place the kinect as high as you can. It says up to 6 feet but mine is almost 6 and a half feet in the air and its behind the tv on the wall. I actually installed new shelves and moved it back further than what it was as the wall goes in at that point.

Pro tip 2 ... Use the cut out and calibrate the kinect. It works okay with with the automatic calibration but in my room I'd be up to the couch and be barely in the 2 player zone for adventures. Calibrating it alone got me much more room .

In my living room I have about 20 feet from the tv to the back of the room and wow does it work really well there. I keep it in front of the screen and i haven't had a problem. It will track my 18 month old nephew with no problems and he even played catch with the tiger in kinectimals. He just doesn't understand its not real and goes up and says kisses and then kisses the screen.

Kinectimals is alot of fun even though its aimed at younger kids. My gf loves it and my mom was playing also. My mother is picking it up faster than she picked up the wii which is a good thing , she is horrible with any type of remote even the tv remotes.

I have yet to try kinect sports. I didn't have alot of time between work and class so I just started the download and left for class and I got home to late to keep everyone up with my fat butt jumping around.

Going to try sports and your shape demo tommorow.

For those looking for mounts , gamestop has some a cheap one

No matter the size of your room i think you should put it at least above the tv

Perhaps it was the onslaught on negativity from "hardcore gamers" and "hardcore gaming press" but I went into Kinect with a ho-hum attitue. Even when I picked up my preorder today, I was thinking of holding off and waiting on more feedback before I try it out. I eventually just gave into my curiousity.

The tech is outright amazing. It just is. I don't even care how it works and so on, I'm just glad it does!

The gf and I are quite tired after all our Kinect Adventures and demo's. I work out hard 4-5days a week and on the harder obstacle course levels, I was done by the end from all the jump squats. Holy crap, that kicked my ass!

Dance Central will absolutely be purchased, along with Kinect sports. I'm hearing great user feedback on both so looking forward to picking them up by the weekend.

I can't wait to see what E3 will have instore for Kinect Hub expansion and games. Maybe it's the newness talking but I can safely say I'm more excited Kinect games at E3 than traditional stuff.

I like using Kinect for party chat when I'm playing game. Good work Bkilian and team.

How do you work the cut out?

Great feedback guys! Thanks! I've been working on my review and it's huge! But I'm so exhausted from playing I'm going to have to try to finish it tomorrow evening. LOL

How do you work the cut out?

IT comes in every kinect game I believe and you hit the guide button and go to kinect tuner. You have the option for tracking , audio and calibration. Select calibration and it will then ask you if you have your card or you don't have it. it makes you line up the eyes with sun glasses like 4-5 times and then its calibrated. Works pretty well and is much better than the automatic calibratrion

Please post it as soon as you can as I am looking forward to it. Would have bought it but it is yet to launch here in the UK.

Why Oh Why did I choose to do my masters in the UK instead of the US of A.

I've come to understand quite late on that this thing apparantly needs quite a bit of room to work properly. How far back do you have to be for the camera to be able to track you?

I believe you can compensate for that by elevating the camera... Anywhere from 6ft or higher... it's an issue of the IR emitter coverage, if I am not mistaken.

my camera is about my height (6'4) Its about 6 feet away from where we play. Don't have an issue two player except my desk being in the way.

Great impressions guys, thanks and keep them coming.

I plan to pick it up soon. One question I have is my TV stand is about 2 1/2 feet high and I planned to place Kinect in front of my TV on the stand as placing it above my TV really isn't an option. Is this not ideal? I'm 6'5" so I'm concerned that I'll have to be pretty far away from the TV for it to read my whole body.

Eh, so far I like much less than I thought.

I was getting a disconnect between pro reviews (fairly blase) and forumers (seem very impressed). Was believing forumers as the media is pretty biased.

But yeah, in my five minutes playing with it, lag is quite bad, I have no real interest in playing Kinect Adventures (seems like a terrible pack in, why not Kinect Sports?) nor dropping another 50 on another hopefully better game (i'm still cringing over the initial 150 after all), I can already see the inaccuracy of the thing (just getting it to recognize my "wave" on initial calibration was a huge chore, in fact I got stuck there for ages. Skeleton tracking kind of cool, but it's a bummer when you realize it's not designed to detect your fingers, as they show up as a lumpy mess). Menus with the thing are terrible, I'm always confused, etc. And, my couch on the side of the room intrudes into the play area, so I'm already experiencing space issues.

That said, the novelty is certainly there enough to make you want to go back to it.

Try the calibration i spoke of earlier in the thread. It might help you out. It worked wonders for me

I have a theory that having a preconceived notion of how you expect the UI to behave is actually a handicap to operating this. I had my 10 yr old niece visiting last night and she was whipping through menus with very little direction from me. The key being she was actually reading the visual cues and waiting for responses instead of anticipating.

I think this may explain the varying results some are experiencing and paradoxically, the less familiar one is with the way the thing works the better it may work for them.

My own experience is a mix of minor frustration and minor amazement. I'm fortunate enough, though, to have a near ideal space to use this in (only problem is low ceilings).

While I'm at it, I want to plug the archived Live-Stream on Giantbomb's JustinTV page.

They go through and play every Kinect launch game and you can see all the highs and lows of Kinect in the 10+ hrs of coverage there. This is effectively the un-edited version of all of the quick looks they have for the games on their main site. Skip to 17:28 on the first section as the footage prior to this is just a title card with music. You'll definitely want to skip around, but the behind the scenes footage gives pretty good insight into the Kinect user experience that might not come through in the edited and game-focused footage on the main site.

Yep, interesting to see Kinect get a firmware update. So we know for sure it has its own firmware that is updatable. Hadn't heard that before.

I'll be the first to admit I really didn't like the initial idea behind Project Natal when it was announced. I originally wanted Wii HD w/ wireless nunchuk & not require any kind of sensor bar or camera. But after some time I realized what I wanted was just some new, interesting & different motion-type gameplay on my 360. Something similar to Wii, but without having to invest in a different platform. After my experience I think I got that & I think Microsoft got it right by going controller-less.

Kinect is innovative & I think a game changer. However, after reading some of the reviews launch night I had a few lingering doubts, but after playing it & watching all my family(wife, son, sisters/brohter-in-law & their kids) play it too I no longer have those doubts.

Is everything perfect? Hell no. There are a lot of things that need work. Something that I fully believe Microsoft can do with software updates. One of the biggest problems is with the logging in & out of users. The Kinect ID is excellent... when it works which it does most of the time. But sometimes it has problems. It's still worth going through the setup because it makes it really nice for playing with lots of folks. One thing that's a pain in the ass is when you're trying to log out. You usually end up having to go to the original dashboard to do that. I think that's the one thing that needs the biggest amount of work. Casuals are not going to put up with it, especially if I'm having issues with it.

What about lag or the gesture recognition issues? Lag is not really an issue. Never once experienced it. Was too busy having fun to notice. Gesture recognition isn't always accurate, but I think it will get better with software updates. It wasn't such a problem that it ruined gameplay. Most of the time you would see it & just retry or keep going. If you run Kinect Tuner like it suggests at different times of day it helps. But I think a lot of hard core gamers will let the little quirks bother them too much instead of just having fun. They need to realize that Kinect is designed for all new gameplay, it's not meant for the games they already play. This is something new & exciting. Forget about those other games & get off the couch! :)

The good stuff? No-controller gaming is a better & different experience than waggle. But that also comes from somebody that doesn't own a Wii or played very many games on that system. But I think being able to stand there in front of your TV & see you control your on screen avatar with your body movements is freaking cool. I also think Microsoft picked the right pack-in too. Kinect Adventures is wonderful! Yes, they are mini-games, but that's exactly what's needed for your first time doing full cardio gaming. Don't kid yourself because you will exercise like you never have before in your own home. I haven't sweated like that in a long time. My whole body is really sore from all the activities yesterday. Anyway, the smaller games are great for little spurts of gaming & is perfect for parties. Adventures is probably THE family game. Fun for all. There were 5 adults(35+) and 7 kids(4-15) playing it yesterday and everybody had a blast. River Rush & Rally Ball were probably the fan favorites. We didn't even really get to Kinectimals or the other demos because we were all having too much fun. Microsoft made a great choice including that game. They also made a great choice by including a demo of Dance Central on the disc. Although there were only 2 songs, the adults & older kids got a kick out of it. I even "danced" a song. It was more fun watching bad dancing than anything. LOL It will most likely be our next Kinect purchase. Don't get me wrong I think there's more to Kinect than just Adventures & Dance Central. Kinectimals is way cute. It's my wife's game & she loved it. It has the Webkinz collectible plushy thing going. She had to have the stuffed animal and she'll get all the Burger King toys too. That's why I'm expecting it to be a big game for kids(& kids at heart) this holiday.

What about non-game uses? No Kinect support in the regular dash is a downer. Was hoping to at least use voice there. The effectiveness of voice control in the hub & the few apps that support it worked surprisingly well. I hope the use gets expanded to the regular dashboard and other apps and a upgrade in vocabulary would be nice too. Would be great to use it for all videos, like Netflix and even those in the Video Library. BTW, it was interesting how Microsoft made simplified Kinect versions of Zune, last.fm & ESPN. If you use a controller it automatically changes to the regular version. Wave your hand again & your back to using the Kinect version. I was also able to use Kinect Hub and the other apps from the comfort of my recliner. Used it to check & reply to messages and look up Friends & achievements. It worked quite well. And I didn't even have to run the Kinect Tuner again when I moved my recliners back into the playspace. One oddity is using the microphones to record audio messages. It really picks up echoes. Not so bad that's it's annoying. Just different enough to notice & feel slightly odd. Like most of the other things, getting used to it doesn't take long. I also think I'm an old pro at navigating everything with the hand now. Unfortunately my right arm is really sore & tired. I had to switch to my left hand. :)

That about does it for my experience. I think it definitely works & works well. I also think that it will finally get me & my family finally active again. With my bad health it's sorely needed. I can stomach doing this kind of physical activity and I feel with enough playing I could really get a bit more healthier. Great job Microsoft & good luck this holiday.

I don't have any experience with somebody that tall in my family, 6ft was the tallest. With our sensor at 2ft high below & center of our TV he needed to be about 7-8 feet from the sensor. If your TV is a LCD or plasma and the top is near 6ft from the floor, then I would suggest the official TV mount for $40.
