Impress AV Watch has a new interview article with Izumi Kawanishi (the head of the Software Platform division of SCEI).

Some new facts about PS3:
+ Using XMB and web browsing won't spin the fan. Playing Blu-ray will spin the fan, but the load is still low especially for early MPEG2 titles. The fan spins steadily while gaming.
+ The picture/audio quality for video playback is excellent. Though Cell does not do much postprocessing right now, they are doing research for it.
+ TrueHD is converted to LPCM and outputted via HDMI.
+ No DVD upscaling for the time being. But they are looking at user needs and have a plan for the support.
+ The Blu-ray player response is very quick. The interviewer says he felt it's the fastest among Toshiba, Sony, Matsushita HD players/recorders he tested.
+ Some contents holders say the speed of BD-Java in the PS3 is the fastest.
+ By pressing the triangle button the XMB shows the folder tree structure as is just like Windows Explorer.
+ It can connect with USB mass-storage devices such as PSP, but not with ones with special transfer methods such as iPod and Walkman. They are collaborating with the Walkman unit for some interaction in the future.
+ It's decided that the RSX clock stays undisclosed :p
+ The EE+GS embedded in the PS3 does emulation for PS1/PS2 for initial shipments PS3, so no graphics upgrade for the time being. The software emulation technology is almost complete but not ready for the launch. As soon as it becomes complete EE+GS is removed from future units.
+ In Remote Play with PSP for the 60GB version, the PS3 resolution becomes 480p (16:9) and converts the screen to MPEG-4 Simple Profile at around 1Mbps to send it to the PSP. All control is transferred to the PSP and you can control the PS3 by pressing the PSP buttons. BD/DVD and other copyright-protected materials can't be sent. As for games the support will come in the near future.
+ Downloaded PS1 games are transferred from a PS3 to a PSP by a USB cable. PLAYSTATION TV (the demo kiosk) starts the download service too.
+ The web browser can open up to 6 pages simultaneously. 64MB memory is always reserved for the browser, the instant messenger and other XMB OS activity even while in game.
+ Installing Linux creates a new HDD partition separately from the PS3 partition. After the setup, you can select which system to use at the boot menu. You can choose to auto-boot Linux too.
+ Aside from Linux, SCE's developers are still seeking the way to publish proper software development environment for the PS3 main OS and PSP for general users. But right now the PS3 main OS can run only signed applications (while PS3 Linux can run whatever applications on it).

64 is less than 96 (it was the speculated OS reserved amount)

well, peanuts between them.
but 64 is twice the ps2 ram for the OS alone.

Cool OS though :D its nice

So maybe one day we will play Heavenly Sword on PSP. Maybe...

Hmm, and it would be great if one day they add suport for independet acces to ps3. I mean, with this remote play PS3 and PSP are in clone mode. Both consoles displays the same images. I would like to see something like browsing net on ps3, and streaming video on PSP.

Can it be done?

definately nice to know. :)

Why no DVD upscaling though. This just means another device has to be connected to the tv set. I always thought hdmi+hdcp was the way to go or hq dvd viewing?

Well they say they are planning on expanding on it, so I think it's safe to assume one of the first few firmware updates will allow it.

I hope this is just a matter of priority for the launch. Remember the PS3 is pitched more as a BD-player than a DVD-player.

This is definitely nice!!!!! :D

I think a lot of games aren't going to be very interesting to play on the PSP through remote. Maybe some of the simpler ones though, through the e-distro, or other emulated stuff that you can't play through PSP PS1 emulation, or maybe some of the original PS1/PS2 games you put into your PS3 - it could be a good solution for playing games like Final Fantasy and MMORPGs remotely though, so who knows. There are certainly possibilities if the infrastructure is there - right now, I still have too few places where I actually have remote access.

As for your video suggestion, I think that is pointless. That would be a situation where you're in front of your TV anyway, so what's the point? However, for games there are lots of pretty exciting possibilities that I hope are going to be used. The little device in the MGS4 trailers that have Otacon on display, for instance, would be great if the display of that were visible on your PSP. And we have a more concrete example in the rear-view mirror demo for F1. Hopefully, that option stays in - it has a high gimmick mode, but nevertheless has a high 'wow' factor also, and would be a good way of showing it works out well.

I'm personally very disappointed in hearing that DVDs and BluRay discs won't be watcheable through the PSP remote function. I was really looking forward to being able to watch some episodes of series I (and my wife) like in bed, for instance. It's not surprising, and I can of course live without it, but it's still a pity. If anything, it makes owning the original discs more rewarding than having to resort to ripped content for such functions. Because the irony is of course that you can probably put ripped content as AVC video onto your HDD, and watch those, and if you can't listen to DRMd music, you can probably still listen to downloaded and ripped music. So I could easily see how this kind of limitation works counter productive towards its original goal - as, I think, many forms of DRM tend to do.

What would be great, imho, is if they ever make a new PSP, that they make something like a sixaxis/psp hybrid, and have all the PSP and sixaxis features in one. That would be great even for the PSP itself (dual analog sticks, games like Loco Roco and Mercury would be even more fun), while at the same time it could also really add to PS3 gaming - having a dispaly on your controller could be great fun, even with instructions, or as a communication device with video through the choto shot, possibilities would be very large. You couldn't use it as extensively for sixaxis movement features in some games, because it would be too heavy, but it would certainly make the PSP more useful as a PS3 controller and remote controller in a very large percentage of the games, as well as really enhance the PSP as a standalone product. An UMTS plugin or even built in would also be great, for always online functionality. Oh and an optional keyboard would be nice too.

Anyway ...

Other than that, thanks a lot for the info, one. Lots of interesting stuff again! Great to hear they are allowing Linux auto-boot, for instance, which seems trivial but is really a must to have the PS3 taken seriously for more computer-like applications.

It's going to be really interesting to see how the instant messenger turns out, and if that is going to work together with other instant messengers at some point.

Can somebody translate what we are seeing here? I'm guessing those are trailers of genji, gt:hd, and afrika?

Conversion of TrueHD to LPCM means its only outputting HDMI 1.1 for audio, which is fine at this point. I wonder if they're doing that with SACD as well and when theyll be offering native TrueHD output, utilizing HDMI 1.3.

Last I've heard was 64 for work and 32 for video.

Anyway, on the RSX clock, I think we'll know it within a week. :)
I think we know it already ;) And obiously the only reason Sony are keeping this secret is due to nVidia putting a media cap on announcements that it's a G80 based GPU :yep2:

Good info there. What's missing sounds like it'll be added in the updates, and all in all PS3 is a very diverse, capable system. It's sounds like a very interesting machine with lots of potential, and Sony are serious about maxing it out. Third time lucky, as they say. Oh, and memory reserved for the browser? Could that mean I can pause my game, switch to XMB, go to some cheat website to look up hints and tips, and then alternate between the game and the website? That'd be a nice feature, far more convenient then having to stop the game and go load up the PC to browse such info!
