Is It Unethical For Companies To Misrepresent Their Products?

Or just good marketing? Is this something we should accept? Or should we burn them at the stake?

Here we have Sony Computer Entertainment Vice President, Jack Tretton, lying and saying Killzone is "definitely" realtime and running on PS3 devkits.

Here's another case, Interview on the Lair E3 2006 footage:

So was the trailer they showed at E3 realtime or CGI?

I was waiting for that to come up. In fact I'm surprised it took this long. The company and Sony anticipated this and we've been told to not answer the question. I can give you some idea of the current graphics though. Remeber the screenshot that surfaced from the GDC presentation? That was entirely real-time, in the engine, as in someone was actually playing the level(in fact I've played that level).

Why couldn't they just state that is was CG? Why would Sony and Factor 5 even have a discussion about this? It's obvious they wanted to give the ruse that this was indeed how the game looked.

Should consumers have to second guess every single screenshot/video released?

I'm personally getting sick of all this "bait and switch" action going on.

I do have lucid dreams, MS didn't lie. Or are you saying my lucid dreams aren't because of an xbox360?? (even if I don't own one)

I still rank Toy Story graphics more impressive than my lucid dreams graphics. While my lucid dreams have no jaggies they are still blurry as hell with vwaay over the top HDR lighting!

I'm not supporting one company over the other. This is in poor taste no matter who it is. I pointed these out because they are the most recent and blatent examples.

I feel screens and videos are far more deceptive than anyone proclaiming lucid dreams and other hyperbole statements.

Remember to add lens flare to your post after <you> render them!

Also, remove that extra HDMI port from your signatur AFTER everyone has bitched about it, and how useless it is. THEN we can bitch about you removing it just for the sake of it!

Finally when it turns out your post is delayed for Europe, make sure every one that hates your post anyway, suddenly loves european and starts making a complete crybaby choir to help the europeans get their posts IN TIME...

schnitz! loool
that explains one side of the "war" pretty well....
good laugh

someone do the sony one!

I think all this stems back to E3 2005. Although this has been going on for an age Sony's PR pulled off an absolutely perfect campaign at E3 2005. MS got murdered by Sony in what should have been Xbox 360 triumphant launch pad. Sony's E3 PS3 launch presentation when you look back on it was a PR master stroke, the media they showed was way ahead graphically of what was playable on the show floor on 360.
Sony did not reported the video’s to be in game (in most cases anyway) but at the same time refused confirm it was CG, target render using in game assets was mentioned (great PR phrase that one). Game Journalists rushed from the presentation their stories rushed to websites and publications in a ****** frenzy. It was only when the dust settled that questions began to raised about what was real and what wasn't. None of this was Sony's fault, they did the job they needed to do very well indeed and it was pretty obvious to me and many others at the time what was real and what wasn't. Don't blame the companies blame the poor state of game journalism where the vast majority of these hacks in 2005 couldn't see they were being taken for a PR ride, but hey free beer and food numbs the senses apparently. The only negative for Sony was that it seems they were to successful at E3 and even today many gamers still believe many of those CG trailers to be real and as the screen shots are slowly being released a more negative reaction than probably warranted is coming to the fore.

Just imagine if Killzone comes out and indeed looks like that CG. I'd die laughing, I think

Probably wouldn't be the only one, even if it looked like that, people in teamxbox would probably still shout DOWNGRADE! IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP!

dont mention that site...
The_Gamemaster f.U.D might start pouring in here too. You know those kids believe anyone who writes expensive words they dont even understand.
I.E: protein folding is now considered useless sony hype over there with no practical use other than, hype! (guess why)

Sorry about that, it had to be mentioned though. When people were debating if PS3 can decode h.264 or not, someone tried to explain why the article was total BS but he got banned instead.

It is wrong, but it's endemic to society. Politicians misrepresent the truth and lie. Corporations do. Charities do. And pretty much every person does too. CV's are hardly the paragon's of veracity they ought to be. Supposedly in first encounters, 60% of people lie. For men they lie to improve their image, and for woman they tend more to lie to put the other person at ease. We're a species of liars! If we want to change that on the corporate level, we first need to change that on the personal level. We need to change ourselves. So anyone who hasn't told a lie or misrepresented the truth even once in the past, say, 5 years, should take the stand and lecture us how to do it. Everyone else should probably worry more about their own behaviour than everyone else (but hey, telling everyone else to fix their own faults is a darned sight easier than trying to fix one's own, huh? ;)).

Interesting thing is (in the console space) Sony is the first one I remember that altered game pics to make them look better than they were. They're "U R NOT e" campaign along with pics of a photoshoped toshinden are the first ones I remember that were not obvous either way. They were pixelated so it had a sense of authenticity but they were also AAed to death to look great. Before this, a screenshot is what it sounded like: A snapshot of the screen of a game being played.

I could be wrong though as Trip hawkins might have started this SS mess:p
