ipod video vs psp - getting interesting

Apologies for going off on a slight tangent, but has no one else seen the quality of the movie playback on the 2700G/Dell Axim?

No. Even worse, I know of no one who even own's one. I know of plenty who own iPods and PSPs though.

I have... looks awful compared to PSP.

The mobile phone is the one network media computer that's actually a part of the average person's lifestyle: connected, interactive, on-the-go.

Yeah but right now it's not a good idea to play movies on it though.

But I don't think the consumer desire for larger phones is there.

Lugging around a larger dedicated video product (not necessarily a PSP mind you) is a better fit for the average consumer because when he does want to watch video, then the larger screen lends to a better experience. But when he doesn't, he can leave it at home. This is just conjecture on my part though.

Movie studios target the most widely adopted format, and phones which can process DVD quality video are already available.

Not sure if you're replying to me or not.

If you are, then none of what you said counters what I mention in regards to the desires of the average consumer - again, all imo.

Secondly it seems that quite a few movie studios are supporting UMD already. What specific format would movie studios use to distribute their content on PDAs? The cellular network? Does that even support real time movie watching? What kind of bandwidth are we talking about here?

At least for broadcast the cellular networks can support it (like SDMB, TDMB, DVB-H, etc.). Not sure if consumers will really want to watch a 2 hour movie, though I can see the ipod model of 30 minute sit-coms, music videos, news, etc. working fine. I wouldn't want to watch a full-length movie on a PSP either, but that's just me.

Thanks, but I'd rather have battery power left in my cell for making/receiving calls with it rather than burning up all the juice listening to music or *gasp* watching video on a stamp-sized LCD screen...

That's only going to improve. I already stopped using my MP3 player and now use my phone (with 512MB miniSD card).

For affording the battery life to play media, just getting extra phone batteries makes more sense than getting a whole separate device which plays media only and has a battery of its own to keep around too.

I got that lg phone that they are showing on tv . Its really nice. I now don't use my ipod . I just have a 1 gig sd card that i got for 40$ and use that . Sure its no where near the songs and when i go on a trip i take the ipod but for short drives or for a day at the mall i use my phone .

Assuming a phone has the same features and sound quality as my dedicated flash MP3 player, I still would want to use my flash MP3 player because it uses AAA batteries and lasts a long time on each battery. To do this on a phone would require multiple phone batteries which would cost A LOT more. If I compared features, my flash player has recording, mass storage, radio, etc. Phones will probably add these features later on too, but the battery is still THE issue.

well my phone plays video , mp3s , lets me text message , lets me make calls and lets me take pictures (1.3megapixel)

When i'm in the car it sits in its charger and when i'm walking its being used .

As i said if i'm going on a road trip i will take my ipod with my nitnendo ds . But for normal every day use the phone is the best bet .

Considering how HUGE that thing is I don't blame you for not wanting to carry other gadgets. :p

its actually just a little bigger than my old flip phone

That phone actually splits open instead of flips . So u can use it when its together and its the size of a nokio or u can open it up for the second screen and watch video or text message. Sorta like a side kick but better designed

I have the same phone, I really like it. I was using a Dell MP3 player before, which itself was pretty big. By switching from a dedicated MP3 player to my phone I paid for it in capacity, but not really in terms of device size.

When mobiles with built in Hard drives's are released then it shall be the beginning of the end for standalone mp3 players such as the ipod.

And when you can buy an organic tech based portable media and computer the size of your thumb with holographic projection and direct brain-transfer for audio that'll spell the end of mobile phones. You're point being?

As much as you may not like Texan, take a look at the Samsung SPH-V5400 phone which has a hard drive in it. It's clearly coming, and I have no doubt that stand-alone MP3 players will fade away.
