If you Americans are worried about losing your freedom...

I would think the conservative leaders would be foolish to expend their political capital on this, as it will only serve to further alienate them from their followers and from the enforcement agencies they will have to depend on to force obedience.

That being said, it's a little bit of a stretch to say a people shouldn't worry about their freedoms just because another country makes a worse joke of them than others. Some things don't stay if you don't watch over them.

It's kind of like telling anorexics they shouldn't worry about not eating enough because there's a famine Uganda.

The bill, which is awaiting Government approval, also bans other public acts of indecency including nudity, masturbation and lewd gestures.

I'm guessing you think this is okay????

Some of it is over the top but atleast it is in public places only. In many places in the world its probably a crime to do 1/2 of the in private.

After all before christ died on the cross certain religons would have senteced you to everlasting torment for evening thinking about doing those things.

I do believe that even after his death a number of religions continued to damn people for even thinking about these things. In fact, I can think of one religion in particular that sprouted up after that time, that has had sects that were particularly averse to such indecency of the mind. ;)

I wonder what passes for a lewd gesture in Indonesia. It's rather fascinating to catch up on the differences between cultures regarding idioms and the meaning behind hand signals.

This isnt politically correct, but this is one of the problems with a rising muslim population in a 'liberal' country. I think we will see this more and more.

Indonesia doesn't strike me as having been all that liberal for the entirety of its existence as a nation. Not only that, but it is not a problem of a supposedly insurgent rising population of muslims, as of 1998, the CIA worldfactbook lists Islam as having 88% of nation's religous pie.

It is interesting to note that these laws are springing up at such an odd time. This is not the heyday of authoritarianism in Indonesia, with problems with separatism and pressures to crack down on corruption from all around. This laws smacks of a reactionary attempt to maintain an impression of control by bowing to a segment of ultraconservative leaders.

I i remember correctly, they are also trying to go the way of sharia law. which would be very scary for a country of that size(population wise).

Probably not the best direction they could go. It would be a challenge to implement, to say the least, Indonesia's archipeligo is pretty spread out, and their security is rather poor. They still have pirates operating in their territorial waters, which is something I had previously thought to have gone out of style in the 19th century.
