I ve got a PS3 which is...

Nesh

Double Agent
Legend
an original European 60 GB model that has 4 USB ports, the additional slots for mem stick duo/SD cards etc, can play PS2 games, and of course still retains the ability to run Linux.

Of course I have aslo a slim, but havent updated the old PS3 so it wouldnt loose its Linux functionality. But this prevents it from accessing online and playing new games since they want a firmware update.

Its been collecting dust for a while now and I was thinking about updating it so it gets some play time.

Now I have a dilemma. Should I update it and start using it often again? Or should I keep it the way it is since its a rare model which also retains the Linux functionality?

Keep it as it is and donate it to your grand kids in a few years, it will be worth a fortune!

Pretty soon there might be many more PS3 running Linux. It won't be a novelty anymore then. its not as if Sony has supported your console. You can't play online on it so it will be pretty similar to the other PS3 that will be running linux with Custom FW as their only downside will also be the same: They can't go online either.

Sorry, Nesh but Sony has abandoned this child it had with you  ! Now, there no difference between it and many more who will be abandoning Sony on their own. All ps3 orphans will look the same to humans.Sorry, but your million dollar plans are doomed unless Sony adopts your ps3 again and lets it have fun online.;) ! Then, with PS2 compatibility intact, it might be worth something.

Its better to just use it while it lasts.

But mine will not have a custom FW. It will be untouched and still run Linux ;)

Update it and use it. The fact that it's gathering dust tells us that the Linux functionality is something that you appreciate more on an intellectual level than on a practical level.

To keep it like it is, unusued and unloved, is a crime.

I know. But sometimes the "collector's" instinct awakens.

Let the big boys handle Linux (PC) and let the PS3 run games.

You mean the Linux-PC platform because usually like 99% of the time when the term PC is mentioned it really means "Microsoft PC Platform"

But yeah let the PS3 run PlayStation games, the hacker community is only really interested in piracy if they really were intelligent those so called "hackers" and "jailbreakers" would have written their own Operating System to run on an Intel Itanium 2 hardware platform and take advantage of that 64bit CPUs capabilities to run an OS that could challenge the dead wood X86 Microsoft monopoly.
