I, Robot

Will smith vs robots gone mad about 20 years in the future. One robot goes bad and people think "it wont happen again"...

If anyone has seen Animatrix, it's strickingly similar to the beginning of the Renaissance Story. Which was also not an original story anyway. Man makes robots, Man makes LOTS of robots, Man uses robots, Robots are not as stupid as man thinks, Robot kills 1 man, Man prosecutes robot, Robots go mad.

Its like blade runner but not as well thought out.

Its like terminator but not as smart.

Basicly a robot that was made by robots kills someone. Will smith's char says the robot did the crime. No one believes him. Some how him and a hot girl manage to save the world even though there is like 3 robots per human and they are all much much stronger than a human.

So basically they've stolen Asimov's title and come up with a load of rubbish?

They didnt steal it
Apologies. "Stolen" was too strong a word. Perhaps I meant to say "bought and then bashed beyond all recognition" :)

Thanks for the review anyway.

I was watching the trailer, and the first half looked great. Cop blames robot for murder, robot denies murder, robots can't murder. Is he going mad? Is there a cover-up? Can robot's kill? Does he just genuinely hate robots?

Then suddenly, there was shooting, killing, robots doing kung-fu, and so not only is any mystery in the first half going to be lost, but it also looks like another Terminator 3.

Ah well.

I wish hollywood would stop taking Asimov titles and make stupid movies about them that have nothing in common with the original story. "The Bicentennial Man" was a truckload of shite, boringest feckin movie I've seen in a decade (worse than A.I.), and this looks to be bollocks as well.

All we need now is for hollywood to make a "Starship Troopers" kind of movie out of Asimov's Foundation series.

I thought that "Bicentennial Man" wasn't too bad an adaptation of the book... but it has been many years since I read it.

...kind of movie out of Asimov's Foundation series.
I thought "Trantor" had already made it into StarWars..... :p

Let me just add that I liked it too. That may be due to me being biased towards Proyas as a director, though.
I was very afraid of Will Smith fucking up the movie, but strangely it worked. Although there was plenty of action, it felt more like a murder-mystery thriller to me (which was good).

kinda like how they destroyed StarShip Troopers to begin with, eh?

I'm embarressed to have to eat all my pre-watching words and say that I liked it and I thought it was faithful to Asimov's ideas.

It was like a book in the robot series that Asimov just never got around to writing, but he could have.

It's a good movie. I hate to admit it, but it's a very good movie and I really liked it.

interesting you say that , coz wasn't the "i-robot" stuff all a collection of short stories... *ages* since i read em (etc)

-dave-

some of the stories are more well known than others of course :)

I think the movie represents Asimov well unlike the movie adaption of Robert Heinliens Starship Troopers. A movie and a book are different mediums, so you have to accept certain Hollywood aspects no matter what.

Ok, first a bunch of space since this MIGHT contain some spoilers (I'm gonna list some of the short stories from "I, Robot" that the movie did use the ideas from)

Ok, here's what I got so far:

-Runaway - The story where a worker told one of the robots with a weakened first law to "get lost" and they had to find him in a bunch of "normal" robots

-Secrets (or whatever it was called)- About the telepathic robot, I think they used a lot of that for Sonny (Along with a lot of Bicentenial Man)

The character of Dr.Calvin was bloody perfect for me too I feel it's worth mentioning, the lady who played her nailed the role perfectly for me. Will Smith's character was a loose almagation of Elijah Baily and Will Smith and as dorky as that sounds it worked well for me...along with the original twist they threw in for the character that I think Asimov himself would have approved of.

I don't think Isaac Asimov would have disliked this movie, and that's about the highest compliment I can give it. :)

i'm really looking out for this movie . can't wait for it . still 2 weeks for over here in belgium

Starship Troopers may not have been what fans of the book wanted, I don't know I never read it, but it was a glorious satire. Frankly, I loved it.

The book was possible Heinlein's best "coming of age" novel and dealt deeply with the political philosophies behind war and had what I personally thought was one of the best descriptions of boot camp ever written.

The movie blew chunks by comparison and made a mockery of the original work. (I hated Bicentenial Man too, they screwed it up ROYALLY! :? )
