Aquamarine in response to spidey numbers:
A metric fuckton. Just wait for PR...which is definitely coming out soon when sales are this good.

Benji:
GOOD GOD SPIDEY

The absolute madness

Starting to think >10M easy.

edit: Benji in response to 20M+ being possible:
Yes. 15m is probably the floor now

Note he is a retail insider in the US AFAIK, so take that with a pinch of salt. But still.

Needless to say, this was a very good time to release a Spider-Man game. The popularity is at a high point, and there hasn't been a good Spider-Man game in over a decade.

I don't doubt 15+ million, but at the same time, I think that's something no-one can predict unless it's sold 8 million already. You need sales over time, and there's no way of knowing how long a game will remain popular for. Just look at GTAV! It all depends how front-loaded the sales are. But, comparison to other games should point to a degree of probability - there's nothing about Spider-Man to suggest sales will nose-dive or happen any differently to other titles. As long as nothing new comes along to displace interest.

I think people are kinda missing my argument. ;) I didn't say SM is undesirable, nor that it lacks appeal. It may well have more appeal than other games. I'm saying it's appeal doesn't include the 'this is one of those video games you must play in your life' sort, but that doesn't mean it's appeal on its merits isn't worth more than that. There are games that sell plenty just on being fun. I'm simply looking at the limited data we have and identifying what parallels there are and aren't.

I think you're wrong. It has exactly that appeal. Just as Spider-Man 2 on the PS2/XBox/GCN had that appeal, no matter its score.

As I mentioned before, as long as the game is good and streamers (and others) genuinely like it, people will pick up on that. And thus 10 million+ was a relative certainty. :)

I also posted that 15 million was possible albeit unlikely, but it's looking more likely now as long as sales continue and don't somehow drop off the face of the planet.

The brand and word of mouth a about a fun game combined with a resurgence in core gamers interested in console gaming has easily overcome any consumer skepticism about another potentially bad Spiderman game.

Also, as I've been saying, while Metacritic is interesting it isn't necessarily a good judge of consumer interest in a game. This is going to become more and more evident if the trend of people using streaming/VODs to judge the quality of a game increase and media reviews start to lose their relevance in the face of people being able to see actual gameplay.

SB

That's not what you said when I predicted 15m earlier in this thread.

You said it'd make it 15 million easy and those who doubted were off their rocker. That was a suggestion based on very little evidence. I've said 15 million is a definite possibility* based on the evidence we now have but it'd still be an incredible achievement, far more than other super-popular games have sold, and there's still no way of being sure (certainly not the absolute certainty you present) because we've no idea what the long-term development will be.

I've not changed position. 15+ million is possible, but far from easy or a shoe-in.

* It would have been clearer if my remark had been "I don't doubt 15+ million is possible", but the rest of the post shows I'm talking about possibility and not sales prediction, like everyone else posting big numbers at the moment.

With great sales comes great responsibility :), a new Ratchet & Clank should be green lit now and with a sizable budget.
I'm really hoping for a new ratchet game, but chances are it will be a remake of Going Commando, then Up your Arsenal.
