Who said anything about "only" supporting 640x480? (actually, from what I've seen from screenshot mods, widescreen 480p is rendered at 720x480)
Well, how do people on regular tv's play the games if the box is rendering at a higher resolution Some sort of down-scaler? Basically like video out from a computer to a tv?
The main thing I was getting at was the widescreen. Sure, you can display up to 1024x768 on regular tv's through video out on ati cards, but that's clearly not 16:9.
So, is the xbox rendering internally at 960x720, or is it rendering the full 1280x720 when a fair chunk isn't even going to be displayed?

I think XBox renders according to how you have it set up in the dashboard. If you have 720P and widescreen checkmarked, then those game that can will render at 1280x720. If you only have 480P and widescreen checkmarked, then the same game renders at 853x480, and so on.
