How many pipes do you think Xenons GPU will have?

does it even have pipes like we used know it? I mean because it is unified shader architecture it doesn't have fixed 6VS and 24 PS or whatever. It has a amount of ALU's which can be either process vertexes or pixels dependent on the need.

one hundred bajillion.

Does the number really matter now? There'll be plenty of power to render standard 640x480. *shrug*

Thought we're also talking about HDTV resolutions?

Well, I would bet most gamers, even casual ones, have monitors capable of higher resolutions than 480p, and if the Xbox2 doesn't have some method of displaying on a monitor at higher than 480p resolution I would be shocked and amazed.

Not suddenly buy it, but it is in the midst (2005-2010) of the HDTV transition, at least in Australia anyway. Hence, expectation will be high to include this feature.

Even the XBox supports 1280x720 for handful of games, and 853x480 for most games, so expecting Xenon to only support 640x480 is being a bit behind the times, no?

Well, even at 1280x720 i'm pretty sure the Xbox 2 will have enough resources to handle a lot of intensive applications at that resolution.

There is a very good thread about the Xbox2 GPU on the main 3D forum here at B3D...

By the end of this year, there will be near that many HDTVs in the US installed base.

By 2008, the forecast is for 60 million households with HDTVs.

Sorry. Another dumb, short, pointless speculatory post that wouldn't go anywhere or say anything, so I had to fill space with a joke. :p

Well, I wasn't saying that it wouldn't or shouldn't.... Sure, most people with computers do have monitors, but who how many want to play on a monitor instead of on the presumably larger tv?

Makes sense. I forgot about the long term. :)

Who said anything about "only" supporting 640x480? (actually, from what I've seen from screenshot mods, widescreen 480p is rendered at 720x480)

Well, how do people on regular tv's play the games if the box is rendering at a higher resolution :?: Some sort of down-scaler? Basically like video out from a computer to a tv?

The main thing I was getting at was the widescreen. Sure, you can display up to 1024x768 on regular tv's through video out on ati cards, but that's clearly not 16:9.

So, is the xbox rendering internally at 960x720, or is it rendering the full 1280x720 when a fair chunk isn't even going to be displayed?

or.... :?:

Ok... but that doesn't make them all gamers.

Man... you guys sure are intent on telling me otherwise.
