How hot do your 360 game disks get?

Does anyone have a non contact IR thermometer? The kind modelers use to measure cylinder head temperature. I'd like to hear what temp your game disks are when just removed.

As I mentioned in the other thread I haven't noticed that they are significantly warmer than any other DVD device in my limited testing. However, I also have my system standing vertically with lots of room around it in a room with low ambient temperature (17-18 degrees C).

Same here, my discs barely heat up after an extensive play session.

They definitely warm up, but not so hot you can't hold them. My guess would be in the 110 degree range.
That sound VERY hot to me, can you use a Thermometer to give us a more reliable figure ?

I had a Samsung DVDROM once (whose spindle motor now acts as a refridgerator magnet :D) that sometimes had a psychotic episode and refused to spin down the disc after inserting it into the tray, it just kept going at maximum gallop. After about ten, fifteen minutes straight of that, the disc came out pretty toasty when I finally got tired of the noise and ejected it.

I suppose some games simply work the DVDROM harder than others. The spindle motor in an optical drive dissipates quite a lot of power, having to turn such a large-diameter disc at fairly high speeds. Not sure how fast 12x DVD is in revs/min, but a guess would be 2-3 thousand or so. Then there's the GPU heatsink straight beneath the unit, and while the design creates sort of a wind tunnel, it's not unreasonable that some heat might leak into the DVDROM simply from proximity contact.

Yeah, he's either joking or just made a mistake. I mean, doesn't water boil at 100degrees? You'd burn your finger tips picking the thing up, or the thing would melt into the unit. :)

He's american, they use nonstandard degrees fahrenheit there, where human body temp ~98 degrees. So 110F would be roughly what, 44C? HAH! Google says 43.33333333C. :D I rule! ;)

How much of the heat though comes from the laser? And will not the blue laser in BR and HDDVD equipment be making the discs even hotter?...

The output of a reading laser is measured in milliwatts, so in all it's an insignificant heatsource compared to the spindle motor.
