Hints to Wii price.

In a recent Forbes article titled "Show, Don't Tell", SEGA Vice President of Marketing Scott Steinberg predicted Nintendo's next console Wii will launch at a price lower than 200 dollars (U.S.).

Steinberg said gamers can bet on Wii arriving with a price point quite lower than that of competitor consoles due to relatively simpler hardware. He stressed that manufacturing volume and not so much price is the concern at the moment, at least for SEGA. "It is critical to our business planning to know how many units will be available in North America," Steinberg said.

Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison commented on Wii's price point to Forbes, as well. "Now that our competitors have put their cards on the table we think we can wait to set the price of the Wii," Harrison said. "Typically, pricing for a console launching in the fall won't be announced until August or September. We were surprised Sony said it [Monday] night."

Recently, Electronic Gaming Monthly published information revealing the Wii's official price point as 0. However, in the wake of other E3 announcements, much of that information - such as the magazine's statements that Metroid Prime 3 would ship in 2007 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl will arrive in the fall - has been proven false (happens to be the opposite of EGM's claims).

It looks like EGM was wrong on many accounts.

199 or lower is perfect for them. Any higher and theyre appraoching the 360 core and i dont think they want to open up those comparisons.

Nintendo has traditionally being able to launch at $199 even with competiive hardware which would equal comparable manufacturing costs. Unless that Wii controller costs alot to make or R&D I don't imagine the cost to make a Wii is even that close to a core 360, and look at the price of their dev kit's compared to the others. That must give some indications of relative cost.
If they can't launch this system at $199 with a 360 core going for $299 I would be very suprised.

My price range : 150-200$/€

Now it depends what's in the pack, if there's more than one pad, or a "full fledge" pad (pad + Nunchuk + Classic) I would lean more to 200.

How about $149? Is that possible? $199 WITH Zelda? Talk about cleaning up...

I'm sure they could, but historically $199 is a very attractive price to consumers. Never mind that $199 now is worth significantly less than $199 10 years ago due to inflation, but the consumer perception is similar. I doubt there will be very much benefit for them to launch at $150 besides smaller profit margins. Certainly no competitive pressure to do so. I suggest that $199 will be percieved as a "value" consumer psychological barrier. Until the Core x360 system hits that low, nintendo has no issues.

edit: Although $199 with Zelda would be an excellent idea next Christmas when the first price drops are likely to hit. I think Microsoft will hold off on dropping the price until then. They have very little reason to do so right now, Sony dropped the ball on pricing. I'm thinking the only thing we may see from Microsoft this Christmas is a HD-DVD pack-in deal for $500.

What if the 360 core is $249 by the time Wii launches?

I'd take either of those.

$199 and no game, I'll wait a couple months, maybe, son's b-day is in November, as well as the wifes. Of course, seeing as how my b-day is a week after my wifes and my son's is the week before hers, maybe they can buy it for me (same bank account, but it feels different, lol) for my b-day.

$149 and I am launch day or $199 WITH game, yeah its only $50, but I foresee spending a buttload on 360 games and/or gamecube games that my son wants to play, in the coming fall months.

But dont you already have the Wii 'preordered' for pickup in November? I 'preordered' mine... ;)

If the N yahoos would have given us a price and a date, I mean why not, we know everyone elses, I would have it on a REAL pre-order not our little "wife-lie". Right now I have paid for about 5 360 games and traded my orig DS for a DS Lite. I would trade the other DS as well, but that might cause an uproar in the house if my wife couldn't play Brain Age until June, let alone my son playing Mario Kart. I would NEVER hear the end of it, so instead, I will have the cool ass DS (which I'm sure will somehow make it onto my wifes side of the bed) and then just wait for months and months until N realizes, there is no since holding back the date and price from us and put money on the Wii.

I'm not entirely sold on the control scheme yet, and I want to hear about the shells and how those will be sold, and as much as I can't stand the resource expenditure for BC, the one instance where I make an exception that its a good thing, is for people that never owned the previous console, so I'm sure I will be buying a host of GC games.

That would be sweet, but I agree with Pakotlar that $199 is the magic pricepoint for consumers on it and to be honest the difference 'tween $149 & $199 just isn't squat in my mind when I look at 'em.

I'd pre-order one at either price, with or without game....but I do hope you're right. (Although I want Duck Hunt II to be the game title included. :p )

I'd say package the Wii oldschool style like NES was:

1. $180 Standard package - Console with remote (w/ nunchuck)
2. $230 Bundle package - Console, two remotes, two nunchucks, and a game. As a bonus, they should also include the "Classic Style" controller.
OR
Duck Hunt Bundle - Same as Bundle package, except it comes with the lightgun accessory instead of Calssic Style controller. (And the game, of course, is Duck Hunt Wii, whatever they decide to call it.)

Since the Virtual Console is made with the Classic Controller in mind (check the videos) I somehow think they will sell the console with one of those.

200€ with a game and the complete controller set would be great !
(Pad + Nunchuk + Gun + Classic)

Count me in if true

the quality of the design and presentation, game play, games and innovative controller has me sold

a prefect 2nd system

$249.99USD, ships with 2 wiimotes (complete with nunchuku) and 1 Zapper shell, 1 Wii game (Wii Sports is a good contestant), and Mario+Duck Hunt for the virtual console. that covers all bases because it has a classic game (one that many people might never purchase because of it's age and simplicity but carries a nostolgic credability that might entice someone to get it for "free") and a modern game that demonstrates the strength of the system.

i miss the days of the pack-in game.
