Ok, so i got this new 4870 card and it runs hot on idle, something like 67-69C. So I'm just wondering should i be worried about long term damage to my other case components if it's operating at this temp? I'll probably upgrade to a new card in a year or two but do you guys think my pc would survive this period without any damages? thanks.

The later versions of the ATi catalyst drivers have fanspeed control.

Under the ATi Overdrive tab you just click on the "lock" and then you can change the fanspeed. I keep mine at 40% and idle is around 40-45'C and load under 65'C.

Otherwise the card is supposed to be able to handle 90+ 'C without damage in the longrun.

Is your fanspeed 40% during full load as well? I've set mineto 30% and it indeed brought down the idle temp, but it doesn't auto adjust the speed during full load so it always stay at 30%. So it means i have to set it higher to cope the full load heat right?
Didn't know you're using ATI card, always thought you're a 8800gt user btw.

Single 8800GTX. Fitted my fears good with my Nforce4 PCI-E 1.0a mobo. I later added a second 8800GTX. Good perfomance but not much better than my single ATi and not as good image IQ (desktop 2D). Would have moved them if it was not for the second card (second hand bought) starting to fail. Could aswell get a single HD4870 with DX10.1 support and great AA perfomance aswell as 2D image quality. Rather have todays ahrdware than yesterdays aslong as my wallet is in agreement.
Sure I could use the sharpening slider in the NV CP but ATi's card is prime right out of the box with super clean image and tite AA!

As for the CCC it's a fixed speed. But there might be programs to allow for custom temp - fanspeed in step modes..

Ah, i see. Im definetly looking for a much cooler card next round though, be it NV or ATI. anyway thanks for the tips, the follow ups should be in the 3d hardware section now.
