Has a video game ever made you cry? (spoilers)

I could get emotional in some parts, but I don't think any game has made me cry yet. (Excluding the negative way. ;) ) Mainly, I guess, because I can't get wrapped up in them the way I will books, TV, or movies. I do, however, get the "coolness" shivers quite a lot! Hehe...

MGS1 ending where Meryl dies.... :(

What?! Given I haven't played the game for quite some time... but did she die? Who was that chick at the end then? Damn, I really can't remember...

BTW; London-Boy, I had similar moments while playing ZOE2! Dang! Too beautiful!!

yeah "one of the chicks" dies in MGS... the daughter of some general if i remember correctly....

regarding ZOE2... i'd be like  sometimes... when i first saw the last ever level, the "Core of Aumaan" where u fight the ultimate version of Anubis, now that was a  moment for me... all those things flying around... i had never in my life seen so many "things" moving at the same time on the screen, in any game in any platform...
oh, and if u guys thought the groups of little robot at the beginning (u know, the ones u have to take down with the homing lasers) were a lot.. then u should play the game on Extreme Hard (i think it's only in the PAL version)(and playing with Jehuty ver2.0 with all the subweapons is not THAT extremely hard)... the number is like tripled or something...

london-boy:

I haven't started the game on extreme yet. I've played a few battles, but that's about it. I'm still not quite sure what I'll do: I'll probably play it through using Jehuty (normal) w/o subweapons on hard or very hard. I think Extreme might be just a bit too hard to handle for now....

Is extreme with subweapons challenging? If not, how's it with just Jehuty 2.0 on extreme (without subweapons)?

right, the Extreme IS very challenging especially if u try to be all cool and take loads of risks just because u're using Jehuty ver2.0... the enemies do A LOT of damage and metatron is rather short on supply... even with Jehuty 2.0 i died a couple of times even before leaving the space ship thing (u know what i'm talkin about)... like, the fat mechs, the ones with the double laser beams, can pretty much kill u completely if u only get caught in the laser for a short while... the enemies are A LOT, they're FAST and deal a hell of a lot of damage. which is cool if u start with the subweapons since u can always recover with Mummy, but without subweapons... wouldnt know, i'll have to try that.
by the way, ZOE2 is the ONLY game i have started again straight after finishing it. and that happened twice already... the fact that it's kinda short helps...

She is the niece of the Colonel himself....not the daughter of some general..

And MGS has 2 endings, she only dies in one of them.
And she was the colonel's daughter, at the end the colonel says something like "Snake......Meryl wasn't my niece. I had learned about this myself just the day before and was waiting until she got back to surprise her...she's my daughter."

Heh, the ending of SH2 made you cry? I thought it was kind of silly, actually. Different strokes, eh?

Personally, only one game to date has made me even think about crying.. and that's FF7 when Aeris.. well, everybody knows. ;)

No game managed to make me cry yet (well not in that way)... I think Planescape: Torment got closest... why oh why did that game have to end? >.<
I wholeheartedly agree with this, PS: Torment was clearly one of the best games i ever played... *sniffs*

Oh yes...Planescape was one of it's kind - I haven't found a game yet with characters so lovely crafted and detailed as in this game.
BG2+Throne of Bhaal was nearly as good but the showdown was heavily inspired by P:T - and the characters just didn't reach the quality level of P:T.

It's so sad that there has never been a successor to P:T. And all the more sad that Guido Henkel (Torment Project Lead) is fed up with the PC game industry and does PocketPC stuff now.

Say no more... Torment is one of those games I plan to finish once I finish unpacking (just moved). I was just thinking of all those Blackisle/Bioware games I need to finish. I guess there is no chance of a sequel for Torment?

When I had a save near the end of some old Star Trek game, and I exceeded the maximum number of (different) saves the game could have and the game become permanently corrupted....stupid crappy point and click adventure.

ah that explains it! In that case, I got the ending in which she survived. Does anyone know how you get the other ending? :D

As for other emotional moments in gaming,

Just thought about another very emotional scene in Final Fantasy VII: The story of Zack!! ('the escape and then death of Zack')...

If you surrender to Ocelot during torture (after your 1st encounter with Sniper Wolf), you get ending where Meryl dies.

I cry whenever I lose a mate in Counter-Strike. I go...

JIM!! JIM!! JIIIIM!!! NOOOOOO!!!!! TALK TO ME JIM, SAY SOMETHING.... NOOOOOO. OHMYGOD IS THAT YOUR BRAINS ON THE WALL. NOOOOO!!!

Imagine this happening 3-4 times every 3 minutes.

I'm a wreck

Cheers

Okay, I may not remember it perfectly, but here goes:

After Cloud got impaled by Sephiroth's sword in the mako reactor at the mountain behind Nibelheim and then threw him into the mako below he was too weak to do anything (as one would be after having been impaled by a sharp blade) and Shinra captured him and Zack, got them back to health and stored them in the Shinra mansion in Nibelheim. By this time everyone in the town is an actor, put there by Shinra to cover up. Cloud and Zack are kept in glass tubes filled with what I think is mako. They are experimented on to see what the effects of the mako are. Cloud is then infused with cells from Jenova. They manage to escape later. Cloud is very weak, can't move or speak (probably something to do with the Jenova cells). Zack takes Cloud with him to Midgar. On a hill above the city they are found by Shinra soldiers and Zack is killed. Cloud, being in the condition he is, is simply left to die.
I think that's it. Oh, and remember that photo that was taken of Cloud, Tifa and Sephiroth in Nibelheim before they went to the mako reactor (this was in one of the flashback scenes)? The guy in the photograph is actually Zack, not Cloud. Maybe you remember that Cloud had been lying about his past to the rest of the team. I think he simply (unknowing) replaced his past with Zack's. That's why he tells them he was in Soldier and all those things that Zack had really done.
You can see a flashback in the basement of the Shinra mansion in Nibelheim. I think you have to examine something there or go there at a certain time.

Oh yeah! I actually remember him as 'The Black-Haired Guy Who Was Actually Cloud*', not Zack

* meaning Cloud pulled some identity theft on him.
