Hands-on with Revolution in the next GameInformer - Ubisoft's Red Steel, aka "Katana"

Can I just post the image shack links that the guy on the other forum I saw these pics on is using? It hurts me to see people begging for them.

Well I have seen them now.

I really dont know what to make of them.

Shrug. Are they too good to be true? Are they promo renders? Do they look awesome or..kinda crappy? Do they look markedly worse or better than 360 games? I just dont know. Overall clearly more impressive than you'd expect I guess.

I just cant see how this would be done with the reported Rev specs. I mean, no new shader capabilities on the GPU?

Those who want to see, all I can say is "Go Nintendo!"

Ok, the urge the see the sc@ns has prompted me to post. So, if anyone could be kind enough to PM a link, please?

Edit:

Found them :D

Red Steel

Does anybody else think this could be a precurser to the final name?

The Nintendo RS

Similar to how DS games use those initials when naming their games? ;)

Well, the first rumoured title was Rainbow Six: Red Steele. So a precursor RS would be possible. But the gameplay doesn't look like the usual Tom Clancy game. Anyway, what would RS stand for? DS means dual screen. RS?

Nintendo Revolution System :)

Is anyone else thrilled that Red Steel is Anti-Aliased? I accepted the lack of HD a long time ago, but if Rev games were just as rife with aliasing as current gen games I would have been ropeable!

The pics look 'next-gen', but there are some caveats I feel. First the scene is in a small enclosed area, so no draw distance to worry. The quality of the texturing is very high, but it's highly reptitve. Those 'fruit machine' things are identical, so a large splash on texture budget covers a substantial part of the scenery.

Quality wise I'm seeing similarities with RE4 in use of photo-textures. Improvements over that GC game are AA and texture res, soft shadows and possibly self-shadowing. Poly counts are up a bit too I think.

I don't think any game can be judged from stills though. Baked on lightmaps can make for awesome stills but look out of place in motion. I'm hopeful this is just a tiddly little example and not stressing the system at all, and that this quality can be obtained outdoors and with more going on. It's a positive first showing, but I don't think it can yet be considered 'next gen' on a par with the other two next-gen consoles until we see a lot bigger world with more happening.

Few weeks wait and we'll see how Revolution games will look in motion, but for now this will do. After the IGN article I certainly did expect Rev games to look a lot worse. It's still too early too judge its capabilities, though. But this is certainly not disheartening.

Agreed. There are some games that just look...very nice.Theymight not be technical powerhouses but they just do things right.Condemend is a title that comes to mind and fits that category and so does Red Steel although the shots are ,apparently,a bit touched up so we'll have to wait to see if it will as clean as these shots indicate.I wouldn't expect games like Oblivion to be released on the rev. anyway.

When is this issue out in the UK!? Is it only in subscribers hands now?, if so when will is hit retail?

So to recap the controls:

Movement:
Analog Stick
Aim: Aim the controller
Fire: Trigger button
Push objects: Push controller forward at objects
Grenade Throw: Imitate under-hand or over-hand 'throw' movement to roll grenades along the ground or arc them
Sword swipe etc: Swipe the controller etc.
Gun rotate: Rotate the controller
Reload: Pull controller back
Jump: Flip controller up

Anything I missed? There's probably more subtlety to some of these, but that's the gist of it as far as I can make out :p

Thanks for all the info Titanio.

:?:Does anyone know/remember what is the state of dev kits they are using till today (ie their hands on day):?:

Know what I would like to stress is that it is amazing the work they done with so litle time, I mean, even if they had the controler at 1 year they still did a lot of R&D on it before they start making the game and it already looks very nice (lots of fixed function HW?), it should be really easy/cheap to make games for Rev as if this is a lounch games then at the best it would have year and half to do it.

Anyway I think it is good to take Shifty Geezer advice, we need better images, movies and, I add, more games.

I'd be nice to know what kind of engine they're using. A custom-built engine or an updated one or HL2 engine? Any news on that?

Well, the only Ubisoft FPS's that I know of are Rainbow Six and I believe King Kong and while both of those have very good looking next-gen versions, their engines don't look too great for this type of game.
