Guild Wars 2: A Different Kind of MMO

The reason there is no rubber banding is because the client is authoritative as far as position is concerned AFAICS (although you'll still take damage for the position the server thought you were in).

How is that supposed to work? I mean once the client realizes that person A is not where it thought person A was, what happens? And does it have to do with string theory or parallel universes? Because I don't see how that could be reconciled without some quantum mechanics weirdness or rubberbanding...

What happens is that person A (which is not the PC) disappears and appears somewhere else, which happened all the time during the server hickups (it uses dead reckoning, so the other characters just followed the trajectory they had when the hickup started). Generally when people say rubber banding they mean having their own character pulled back to a previous position though, which doesn't happen here ... because they simply made the client authoritative for position.

Oh I was misunderstanding the term rubberbanding. I thought it applied to other players as well.

I went and bought the game. It's installing right now. First ever try at an MMO..

edit lol it took about 45 minutes to install from the DVDs and then it has to dowload a god damn 5GB patch what the fuck. 5GB patch? I can't even imagine.. am I redownloading the entire game or something?

I'm going to guess that the infrastructure is just better in NA then, as I haven't experienced any of that despite having high numbers of players on screen and in the zone.

Then again I didn't play during prime time on the 28th, so it's possible I missed out on them at that point.

Thus far, this has been the smoothest MMO launch I've been a part of.

After 6 years of EVE Online, i'm pretty bored and I'm searching another online game. GW2 seems good on paper, but i've a question, can you enjoy it if you play mostly solo ? Or are you kind of screwed if you're not in a guild ?

Thx :)

You can play it "solo" (as in not join a guild neither group) and don't need to play long to achieve things.
(30 minutes min I'd say)

In fact you'll be playing with other people in the area, you can help them, they'll help you, there's no competition at all in PvE, resources nodes are instanced per player, monsters xp is shared (and not divided)...

It's just a pure coop game, and you cooperate when you feel like it, a player is always a welcome sight, and never an hindrance, unlike almost all other MMOG.

I played a bit last night after the client finished downloading half of the internet. I ran around with a crowd of people clicking on things. In the chaos I couldn't tell that my character wasn't doing anything, and only later did I realize that you must press a number key to attack. Lot of good I was!

If you're after something different than fantasy, try The Secret World. Has a 3 day trial.

I would suggest to stay away from MMORPGs ;). As for the another online game you could play, how about Action HL2. :D

I'm really digging the crafting system. I think this will actually rival the crafting system in Vanguard at least with regards to recipe discovery.

In fact, I'm purposely avoiding any wiki's/forums/spoiler sites with regards to crafting just because the discovery aspect is so fascinating.

Just thought I'd throw that out there since I now seem to spend most of my game time just playing with crafting and farming mats to play more with crafting. :D Usually I'm not "that" into crafting, but they sure made it interesting in this one.

Started crafting too, weaponsmith & chef, it's rather fun, the second require a vast amount of inventory space though ^^

For those still on the edge of buying ... server problems have subsided, auction house still offline, some story quests still bugged. It's pretty much playable now, also for a lot of PvE content you are extremely dependent on server population in your level range (one of the reasons I hate the server system) so if you want to enjoy it now is the time.

guildwars2.com have stopped ("sold out") selling new serial codes. Who else are digitally distributing this game or at least selling legit codes?

Is it my imagination or does the WvWvW balance not work so well? All the most organized guilds gravitate towards the servers with greatest organization it seems to me.

Well, in theory the following is supposed to happen.

After each WvWvW match, servers are either promoted or demoted depending on their performance. If you have a low pop server with bad organization eventually you should be demoted down to the level of other low pop servers with bad organization. The flip side of that is the high pop good organization servers will eventually end up matched with other high pop good organization servers.

I imagine it'll take a bit of time. The first WvWvW period my server got absolutely creamed. This WvWvW period we're actually competitive against the other two servers we've been matched up with.

So it seems to be gradually working out. I imagine there will continue to be blips if a server gets promoted up due to winning their round. While the opposite could be true of a good server getting demoted to a lower level and wrecking havok for a round.

Went out and finally picked up my copy on Friday. I played almost nonstop until yesterday. For those of you on the fence about this one, I can honestly say it's the most solid MMO since WoW, and assuming the game has any lasting appeal, which I've found it has thus far, it's definitely a solid competitor for the throne of best MMO.

However, the game still needs serious optimization. I'm hoping that upcoming patches and Nvidia drivers resolve some of the lack of framerate stability I've been encountering. There's moments where my framerate absolutely plummets, which is odd considering I'm using dual GTX 580's and an i7 2600 K. My question, is what drivers are you Nvidia users using? I'm using the most recent beta drivers and aren't too pleased with them, thus far. I may revert back to the most recent WHQL's to see if there's any significant performance increases. I've also tinkered with enabling and disabling adaptive Vertical Sync, I'm not sure whether it being on or off is better.

It runs great for me I use driver 306.02 with a i5-3550 and GTX670. The game is also installed on an Intel 330 series SSD. Don't know if that would make much difference.
