The screenshots which were suppose to be 1080i didn't really look that much sharper than the 480i/p ones. Yet some people claim it looks great.
I will probably rent this since I would rather wait for the online edition (although since it supports LAN play, tunneling software should support this?).
PC-Engine said:The actual resolution is slighter higher than 480p which then gets stretched/scaled to 1080i.
PC-Engine said:Uh..no...sorry but it doesn't work that way.
i = interlaced...
Ever heard of an upscaling DVD player or an upscaling TV? Does the movie on the DVD disc magically become higher than 480p resolution?

Yeah, ever heard of screenshots and reviews?
Pretty much everyone that has the game and played it in HD, said it looks better and more smooth. And the "way old" screenshot that was posted clearly had more resolution, i even think that Faf said it was "as he thought" a Double Vertical Res trick.
And if you want to discuss Upscaling, go to avsforum and spend a lifetime there, it's an artform!
PC-Engine said:Oh and uh maybe it is you who need to visit the AVS Forums since you need to go to school on the subject of what a real 1080i HD signal is.
PC-Engine said:Just wanted to make the point that if you have a 1080i display, it's highly likely that your display upconverts a 480p signal to 1080i anyway. The game does offer the widescreen option which is very cool.

GT4 1080i probably uses 540-line field buffers, so you should be getting more resolution than 480p even per field. And when the two 540-line fields are interlaced, the effective vertical resolution is 1080i. Upscan conversion of a 480p signal won't get you this.
The horizontal resolution probably isn't much higher than the horizontal for 480p, though.
PC-Engine said:True but that's why I said slightly higher resolution than 480p. The point I wanted to make was that it's similar to what upscaling tvs do to 480p signals which also results in better image quality.

You can say that again.phat said:Of course, there are drawbacks to interlacing which we all are aware of...

480p signals have effective resolution of 480 lines. When you upscan up to 1080i, you're not going to get any more information from interpolating between those 480 lines, so the information in that 1080i image is still just 480 lines. GT4's 1080i image, OTOH, contains 540-line fields that aren't just interpolations from a 480p source, but staggered renders of a scene, and so what you do get is a scene rendered with 1080 distinct scan lines, so the effective resolution is much higher, not slightly higher.
Of course, there are drawbacks to interlacing which we all are aware of...

Do u?
