Guys who are normally in favor of the Xbox have said this looks better than any Xbox game in 1080i mode. Supposedly no stuttering or frame rate drops.

The screenshots which were suppose to be 1080i didn't really look that much sharper than the 480i/p ones. Yet some people claim it looks great.

I will probably rent this since I would rather wait for the online edition (although since it supports LAN play, tunneling software should support this?).

It's been mentioned a few times already that the 1080i mode in GT4 is FAKE!!!

The actual resolution is slighter higher than 480p which then gets stretched/scaled to 1080i.

Screens does show more detail in 1080i, and slightly higher? Isn't it supposed to be twice the Vertical Resolution?

Uh..no...sorry but it doesn't work that way.

i = interlaced...

Ever heard of an upscaling DVD player or an upscaling TV? Does the movie on the DVD disc magically become higher than 480p resolution?

Does it really matter if it is true 1080i, or some "hack", as olong as it gets a job done, in this case providing a visibly better iq than standard resolution.

To me it really doesn't matter. 1st because I don't have a display that could take advantage of the fake 1080i mode, 2nd because that feature is not in the PAL version (or so I heard).

Just wanted to make the point that if you have a 1080i display, it's highly likely that your display upconverts a 480p signal to 1080i anyway. The game does offer the widescreen option which is very cool.

Yeah, ever heard of screenshots and reviews?

Pretty much everyone that has the game and played it in HD, said it looks better and more smooth. And the "way old" screenshot that was posted clearly had more resolution, i even think that Faf said it was "as he thought" a Double Vertical Res trick.

And if you want to discuss Upscaling, go to avsforum and spend a lifetime there, it's an artform!

Um if your tv supports 1080i and upscales everything hooked up to it through component then everything would look better including Xbox, GCN, or a regular DVD player LMAO. Oh and uh maybe it is you who need to visit the AVS Forums since you need to go to school on the subject of what a real 1080i HD signal is.

wco: Yes, I've seen many people post about playing GT4 online through their PC and broadband connection. I guess there's some software to download and boom, you're on. Someone on gamefaqs.com can probably tell you about it.

Man.. how do you answer such flamebait? Ignore it of course and hope that a mod will tell you to shut up? (HAHA UNLIKELY!)

But since you haven't understood the difference between the GT4 "upscale" and the way a HD set upscales i guess there really isn't any reason to try and help you... I wouldn't want to end up with another OMG SUPERBIT IS A HACKED FORMAT thread..

GT4 1080i probably uses 540-line field buffers, so you should be getting more resolution than 480p even per field. And when the two 540-line fields are interlaced, the effective vertical resolution is 1080i. Upscan conversion of a 480p signal won't get you this.

The horizontal resolution probably isn't much higher than the horizontal for 480p, though.

True but that's why I said slightly higher resolution than 480p. The point I wanted to make was that it's similar to what upscaling tvs do to 480p signals which also results in better image quality.

I thought the point you were trying to make was ROFLMAO  :devilish: GT4 IS CRAP I MEAN :devilish: 1080I IS FAKE AND HEY I MEAN LOLLLL HOW CRAP IS THAT MWAHAHA  ;) :D
But maybe that's just a wrong impression.

Is there going to be some "Special Edition" GT4 for Europe?
I read in CVG that "Yamuchi-san has discussed the future of the series in a book entitled Driving the Game, which appears in the limited edition European version of Gran Turismo 4"
Does the US version have this book?

480p signals have effective resolution of 480 lines. When you upscan up to 1080i, you're not going to get any more information from interpolating between those 480 lines, so the information in that 1080i image is still just 480 lines. GT4's 1080i image, OTOH, contains 540-line fields that aren't just interpolations from a 480p source, but staggered renders of a scene, and so what you do get is a scene rendered with 1080 distinct scan lines, so the effective resolution is much higher, not slightly higher.

Of course, there are drawbacks to interlacing which we all are aware of...

You can say that again.

Do you have a source that confirms this regarding how GT4's 1080i output is rendered?

It's seems what you're attempting to describe can easily be used to describe 480i upscaled to 960i.

Wow  Yesterday I got to see GT4 on a 42" plasma.
It ran on the relgular resolution, not the "fake" 1080i.

The image quality was great! Much better than GT3 and GT Concept, don't know about Prologue as I haven't sen it in person. Didn't really see much jaggies or flickering (just some in far away thin poles and such, but such that can be seen in any game, in any console because of the fact that these are relatively low res), in fact I think in those respects the image was surprisingly clean. The tracks were the canyon track and New York track. Maybe there'll be more flickering in some more high contrast tracks, but at the moment I really don't see those being a problem to even more critical eyes.

Overall the game looked jawdropping. I didn't think a PS2 game would amaze me any more, but imo GT4 really looks incredible.

Didn't play the game, just watched.
