That 9.5 doesn't even begin to compare to the nice score Gamespot gave it ;)

Although i'm not sure why they gave it a much lower score than GT3, when their review is 4 pages of "GT4 trumps all over GT3 in every single aspect, no comparison."
I think there is an easy answer to this: A sequal that comes out 3 or 4 years after the first release has to (a) compete with itself (b) compete with the generally imrpoved quality on the platform (c) is viewed in light of how the industry, including the PC, has developed, and (d) what did the sequal do to remedy issues in the game. More of the same is great for the fan, but how does it work to appeal to more gamers and resolve issues that frustrated fans and/or the casual gamer?

Now incoherent rating system is GS. They rated HL2 LOWER than 2 FPS in 2004 yet decided HL2 was the FPS game of the year. Yeah yeah, different reviewers (individual vs. staff consensus) but the point is the numeric ratings are "sux0rs!!!11" 9.7 times out of 10 ;)

GT4 looks great. The only thing I would say sounds dissappointing (other than no Internet play) is the AI. Yeah it wont be an issue to all people, but reading reviews saying, "Oh, you just play against yourself to best your top times" is a cop out. Games with poor/weak AI better let you play humans online imo. But that is just a small flaw in a really really impressive game. Sure to make car enthusiests happy. While many would disagree (hear it all the time) more of the same of a good game is good all around.

I always take the rating to be for the game itself... not as some relative e-Penis size. :p

Why, oh why is there no i-net play? :sigh: Just bought a PS2 slim today, and GT4. Like a stupid consumer, I didnt check everything first. I thought it had it. I do remember a few months ago, I read several places that it would have it, so I assumed it would. Did it get pulled at the last min or what?

So annoying. I guess Ill keep it, but was really looking forward to playing online.

I guess it does. On the bright side, Ive still got my old trusty Negcon controller, which btw is the best controller for racing of all time (imo). Have had it about 9 years.. but its still in good shape. Love how PS stuff is backwards compatible.

You might still prefer the DS2, as the Negcon has no rumble feature, and imo in GT it does add to the game unlike in many others.
I remember I tried the Negcon with at least WipeOut Fusion, and that game did not recognise the controller, and Ridge Racer V too.
I don't think I've been able to use the Negcon in any PS2 game, though I've given up even trying after Wipeout Fusion.

I think the Negcon must have support specifically written for it in game for it to work, and I believe it's very much a discontinued peripheral today.

Yes, PS2 definitely needs it's own PS2 8MB memorycard.
You really haven't been following the console scene lately, have you :)

No, I only have only had a Gamecube for this generation. And mainly for my little girl, although I must admit, I really enjoy Mario Kart/Party.

At one time, I had a 3DO, 2xPS1, Saturn, and N64. I was very big into it.. then came our first kid, and my wife stayed home for about 3 years. About that time, I got into PC's.. which I grew to like more. Having every console was very expensive, as there was always a game to play. Got too expensive. :)

I just assumed it would work. :( I also need to find a component cable for it. Madcatz has one for $10 on bestbuy.com. Others are $50&$60.... I think Ill go with the $10 jobber. Cant wait to see GT4 in 1080i in 57" WS glory. :)

GT4 online? Seems like it works.

I cant try it myself, as I made another bad assumption. I thought my old memory card from the PS1 would work, but it says it cant find a memory card when its in there? Ugh, there goes another $25. You have to have one to go multi.

My god where have you been in the last 4 years?? :D

Fallguy, considering you have a PC and would have to have the PS2 on your network anyway, you can always tunnel the game. I believe there are actually particularly good services out there now for GT4 filling the gaps. Can't never hold crazed geeks back. ;)

Oh, sorry. I'm on a different computer that's not as responsive--I think my "PageDown" lagged and skipped a page or two without me noticing. ;)

Well, I gave it a shot, anyway.

I took GT4 for a spin at Best Buy just now, and walked away somewhat underwhelmed.

Graphically, the game is beautiful. And still I may have expected too much, as I can name one or two other racing games on other platforms that look better. Granted, these games run at 30fps, but truth be told, on the races I just raced, it's not like it felt any more fluid moving at 60fps.

The real turn-off was the AI, which apparently, the programmers at Polyphony Digital think is a steak sauce.

My first time around the New York track, I stumbled a bit and rubbed a wall. That's when a dumb-as-rocks AI opponent came up behind me, rubbing my back fender and scraping me helplessly along said wall. I winced but continued.

It happened again on Lap 2, same corner. Exactly the same way.

That's when I put the controller down and walked away, knowing the fifty bucks I carried would be safe in my wallet until NEXT week when I buy Tekken 5.

I suppose you could argue that I suck because I messed up the same corner twice. The thing is, I'll get better. The half-witted AI will not.

Ah, well. Project Gotham 2 wasn't bad. The Kudos system actually kind of grew on me. And that's where I'll have to get my racing fix, I suppose, at least for the time being.
