Gran Turismo 6

To me it may be worth it if it means they are moving to day-night and variable weather on all tracks, or maybe at the very least all non-city tracks. But we'll have to wait and see if they manage that ... Silverstone very likely will be one of those though, all newer, real life tracks seem to in GT5. But there it seemed they did something like map lighting manually according to the environment of where the car was driving, whereas with GT6 they seem to want to do that dynamically. Just speculating mind you.

I wouldn't be worried about your time, it's ok time if you don't exploit realistic approach to driving. I have 2:19.271 and I wouldn't drive like that in real life with tyres screaming, drifting around corner to get faster through, etc ... but I like physics too, unfortunately good game makes more than that and I'm not decided if I buy GT6.
Ya seems like all the times under 2:20 people are sliding around turns... never been very good at that. My best is 2:21:635 racing clean... don't think I can do much better unless I start power sliding around turns. Also relatively new to Silverstone... this demo was the first time I've seen it... that's my excuse. :)

I would advice to get Academy Edition. It includes most of the game patches and DLCs.

Can't find th eAcademy edition, but found someone selling GT5 for like $10. Going for that on Monday.

I think I might be disappointing, cos I just couldn't drive in gt5 academy, while I am pretty fine in gt6 academy. I think driving has been made easier in gt6. ALso gt6 is prettier too and that suspension model will be badly missed. Everything feels mreo natural in gt6 academy compared to what I remember from playing gt5 academy.

Anyways, can't expect to lose too much at $10, but I want to get hooked to it.Lets hope I will still be able to enjoy gt5 !

EDIT: Does gt5 also have day night transitions???

If you want a vid without assists, here's two of my session today. I managed a 2:22 flat ... really difficult and technical track this. Good choice for GT Academy for sure. Really appreciating the new physics more and more. Note that tge fastest lap currently is 2:17,5 so I am by no means world class.

Are you using a wheel or playing with a DS3? Thats really smooth driving, man ! I gotta try harder, but those two almost hairpin turns totally make me either too slow or throw me out of the track. Gotta learn !

It's easy to find enjoyment from GT5, from the special events, the licence tests and the huge car library. Just driving on the Nurburgring, Le Mans with day night cycle, or the rally track in the Alps (beautiful). As you can set up and choose cars in the regular races, you can get cars that already behave quite well more easily.

It is true, the driving model is a step more realistic again in GT6 though, and the closer to reality, the easier it is to fransfer your real-life driving skills. But GT5 isn't bad either!

Yes, I drive with a wheel btw, always have basically (since 1993 or so - jeez, that's 20 years!). But I've met a lot of people faster than me with the DualShock. Personally, I prefer driving with the right analog stick for accellerating, so I have better control over it. The triggers are ok too, but I got so used to shifting using R1 and L1, and that's hard to combine with R2 and L2 for gas and brake. But I have tried using the face buttons for shifting instead, and that is probably better combined with R2 and L2, so that may be the better option.

Lot of great drivers have great control with x and square for braking and gas though - these buttons are still analog, and the pros can get great precision from them, and press and modulate brake and gas at the same time with a single thumb.

Yep, and I'm also surprised, thought they looking for race drivers in GT Academy, not drifters  ... fastest guys are the most precise anyway, with or without drifting.

Yay ! Finally got bronze :p ! Might be funny to you pros, but this is the first time I am feeling the joys of a sim  !

Still can't even dream of Silver time. BTW, I am driving with ABS set to 1, everything else is off, and automatic transmission. Are there any rules for what u can turn on or off for this competition? Or is everything allowed ?

Yeah, I can also get the control with X and O, they are analog after all. MGS3 taught me that pretty well :D !
Is there any way I can load your ghost in my game? Or the ghost of the guy who has the best time?

Edit: 2:35 is my best time till now! Phew !

I don't think there's any rules for settings, but you're more likely to get a top time with assists off. I play with assists off, ABS set to 1, manual transmission, my wheel set to simulation (although I don't think that has any effect on the Driving Force GT wheel) and the race line off.

What about 'Traction Control' ? I have left it to the default =7.

I won't be able to manage with manual transmition, but I am getting better. I found that not following the line, in terms of braking, helped me shave off a few seconds. But its risky, go too fast into a corner, and you go out of control. So, its more of trying out different speeds while going in on different corners.

BTW, the track seems like a perfect choice for a test of skills ! Tricky corners every now and then.

Also, how can I load a ghost of someone else? I can see the option to load my own ghost of a saved replay, but I want to see how you or other good drivers drive.

Traction control will help inexperienced players from spinning out frequently, but it only slows you down. Most set it low or off... I personally always set it to 0. I would slowly lower it and you may actually find yourself improving your lap times.

The race line is just a guideline, it's usually better not to follow it exactly, but it's helpful for beginners, especially for learning the brake points and how to approach and execute a corner.

I watched both of your videos and I have a feeling that you pull your car up to the kerbs so much that it was kind of scary to see how closer to the grass you were. Not overly shocked, but it caught my attention. Nice driving overall btw. I wonder if the spin at the end was intentional or not. I think it was because your driving was mostly impolite til then.

Your driving was as different as I expected. I am not saying this because I am used to the feel and touch of Forza, but how you attack the turns. As I said you seem to go in too deep, but on second inspection I noticed that you let the car roll and you use a large arc, a larger arc than I expected.

I shall try something similar in Forza 4 and bring back some of my good ol' skills by working on braking earlier, then coast to the apex, and finally driving out. I may get my laps faster too. In Forza 4, I am in the top 10000 drivers in the scoreboards, in a couple of tracks.

The replays look great too. It seems that the body of the car rolls quite realistically on the suspension. It looks very dynamic.

My only gripe is that the dashboard shadows are very distracting during the race.

The replays show some problems with the shadows too. It's especially noticeable when the camera switches the aerial isometric view.

I think they could sacrifice some extra pixels to get better shadows/framerate. I am with Nesh that Polyphony have changed their priorities, all things considered.

This technical marvel is still -imho- their work of art.

It is the same company that made this after all.
