Good HDTV for SD

I am thinking about buying an HDTV at some point in the not too distant future. I suppose I shall eventually get an Xbox 360 as well. However, the main problem is that I still intend to make use of loads of SD content. My N64, Gamecube, and SNES all get a lot of use, and I'm planning to pick up a PS2 at some point as well. Some HDTVs do a great job upscaling from the S-video input (everything, including my SNES, goes through S-video right now), but some are just horrible at it. I want to get an LCD because I don't want a back-breaking CRT. Does anyone know what brands are good, and which should I avoid?

Plasmas have the best scalers right now, Panasonic or Pioneer models. They're not LCDs but they are not "back breaking CRTs" either :)
With a recent model you should'nt have trouble with burn in, and the response time is better.

From the experiences i had with old consoles on hdtv i would recomend you keep sdtv for those specialy playstation 2 games look really bad xbox and dreamcast look nice enough on hdtv not ps2 not sure why i guess lower resolution maybe

Sony's have good scalers.

I have a KDF E2000 46" projection LCD TV that does an excellent job.

Well I wouldnt suggest any fixed pixel display tech., Im inclined to agree with many posts here that plasma is your best bet and then dlp.

Yes i confirm, Pionner and Panasonic scalers are great.

I am using a Pionner 506 Xde with old school hardware since 2 years . Pio 508 series is even better (deeper black) and full hd

Dreamcast looks superb on this screen. The most problematic hardware are PS2 and XBOX 1.
Hi-rez Virtua fighter 2 on Saturn looks cleaner than Wii !

Just two shots from a Pionneer 506 XDE on a japanese Megadrvie with Thunder Force 3. (1meg per shots)

Wasn't the VC Virtual Fighter 2 the Genesis port, not the Saturn one?

Some TVs have bad upscaling lag, but it is nothing inherent to DLP.

So how does DLP upsaling fair aginst most LCD screens? Do they measure upscale lag in milliseconds and list them on TVs like they do with other signals? (I also heard somewhere that you should avoid Samsung sets, as they tend to have terrible upscale lag.)

It is the video processors inside the displays than handle the scaling, the display engine just presents the result. So there is no inherent difference between scaling lag of DLP, LCD or any other fixed pixel technology, it just comes down to what scaler is used in them. It isn't something that is listed in the specs though and for most modren displays it is pretty close to instantaneous. As for Samsung, I know some older models had bad scaling lag, but I haven't seen any lag issues with their current offerings.

The saturn one was 720×576.
