YAY!!!! :D

Me wife was trying to talk me in to taking the kid's to Friday's for lunch, but I'm feeling lazy and I've been good lately so I made her work for it...

I told her that would be fine with me if we stopped at Radio Shack on the way to pick up a DVI cable. ;)

Uhm, should I get something to hook up the sound with too that's better than just a line-in? I got an Audigy2 and the TV/soundsystem has oodles of hook-ups...

They had one at RS, a "Monster" branded one that they wanted $135us for!

I've not been so flabbergasted by a store trying to assrape a customer in a loooong time. They're very nice looking and I'm pretty sure they'd be most excellent at what they're for....BUT WHY $135?!?!?

Just checking on this, but does a cable carrying a digital signal REALLY need to be that good? I'd think that an analog signal would need better cables more. :?

I have two sets of color component cables; a set of monsters that the cable company gave me/installed and a pair I cheated together from a bunch of old video RCA patch cords. I can't tell the difference 'tween the two sets 'cept for price.

Got home, hit Pricewatch, ordered a 10' dvi mm for $11.96 shipped from a store with a 5 star rating. It'll take a bit of time, but I'll have my ultimate monitor yet.

Is there really a need for a supey-dupey quality DVI cable? Or was I right to assume that a generic for a tenth the price should work just about as well?

Oh, and I picked up this optical cable for $12 whilst out....I sure hope I can use it. Can I use it to hook up my Audigy2 to my Altec-Lansing ADA885s? I've never had an optical cable to play with before...

Monster Cables are always 10x the normal price, at any store. Total RipOff. See Here

Thanks, I figured as much.

Now what do I need to make this optical cable work? Something to make it able to plug into my Audigy2 I'll be wagering....

I personally enjoyed the time a salesmen was pitching the "turbine cut ends". LO-freakin-L. If I was worried about signal loss due to the connection I'd friggin solder the sucker to the connector. Give me a break.

My fave was this bit:

Monster developed a unique gas-injected dielectric. This creates uniform, microscopic cells that keep the conductor in the cable’s exact center. This maintains precision 100-Ohm impedance and delivers the digital signal in its pristine state.
For some stupid reason it just slayed me!

Back to questions; so where do I get the adapter for my Audigy2 for it's coaxial digital output to turn it into an optical one? :???:

Actually, you'll find this ironic, but RadioShack makes one.

Link

Might want to find out the quality, that's all...

For that price I'd expect the cable to be made of solid gold (it is the best conductor after all).

No fricking way!

I'm off to RS, be right back...

Uh, I don't know if that works.

Also converts audio phono outputs to an optical (Toslink) or a coaxial (RCA coax) digital audio output.

So Analog to Digital (Toslink or Coax) but NOT necessarily Toslink to Coax. But hey, maybe it does.

Nope, it doesn't.....but for $3.47 and the last one in stock I just couldn't resist! :p

So, where do I get the right thingy? I think it comes standard with the ZS line of audigy2s, but I just need the little connector thingy. :???:

From looking at the spec for your speaker set, it doesn't have optical input. Unless this link is wrong http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/hardware/reviews/altec_ada885/wiring.jpg

What you need is a stereo 3.5mm minijack to RCA adapter cable. Connect from the SPDIF output on the Audigy2 to the coax input on the speaker set.

The SPDIF output is the one marked digital out, and is near the end of the card(where it screws to your case).

No, of course digital cables don't need to be THAT good... Also, it would seem ultra-expensive cables aren't always anywhere near as good as they say they are, wether it's build quality or signal integrity.

One might consider that cables delivered as standard with monitors, gfx cards or (brand-name) computers are cheap and factory-made, yet surprisingly gets the job done just as well as a monster $150 cable. ;)

Even analog signals aren't always overly fussy unless the cable's outright badly designed, or the signal carries very high frequency information (read: VGA, ethernet etc). I read an article somewhere by an audio specialist who used a strand of solder as a line patch cable and the sound was indistinguishable from using a proper line cable. It was a very harsh and brutal dissemination of high-priced audio cables, well worth reading.

Then again, people with too much money for their own good might want to get high-priced audio cables just as status objects, or for the cool looks (some have a really nice design).

If you want it to be 15 meters long, then you should probably get a good quality one... :) Not from monster or any such place tho.

As you've undoubtedly discovered by now, the Audigy2 lacks an optical output (bit cheap of creative I feel). Yet, an optical cable is always a good thing to have, should you get a next-gen games console for example.

That's nothing...I've seen a rusty nail and a coat hanger work flawlessly as a coax digital audio cable. :)

Ah, so I blew $20us or so on a couple of things that won't work for what I want them to do....but I probably got the parts in my filing-cabinet-o-supreme-geekdom that I need to do what I want.

Ah well, so long as no one here tells me wife that I'm cool. ;)
