God of War 2 - March 13th

It probably was more of a bitch to develop for, but the Santa Monica crew already have a stellar engine for it, the public are still grabbing PS2s off the shelves, and it made perfect sense to target God of War 2 again for the PS2. It's capitalizing on their hard work for the past 5 years... if I were them, I'd even make another game God of War for the PS2 (although it would be probably a stretch to ask full price for it in 2008).

I have no doubts that the team in Santa Monica will be able to master the PS3, they are probably hard on it right now while we're wasting our time on forums :) But had GoW2, with the same release date, been targeted at the PS3, it would probably damage the franchise beyond repair.

OR...

It would have technically rivalled what we are seeing from Sony's internal devs doing PS3 games so far, in terms of graphics rendering (and looking at games like motorstorm, that's DEFINITELY not a bad thing..), maintained the same superior degree of gameplay mechanics and art direction but taken aloooot longer..
If they did decide to do God of War 2 on the PS3, hjad they startefd development at the same time, it probably wouldn't see release until 2008/9 anyway..
And since they'd have to re-write a new engine, re-build the tools and get a new asset pipeline up and running, the game would probably end up being more of the same but with better graphics (not that that's a bad thing..)

I suspect that GoW 2 on the PS2 is probably just that though (more of the same but with better graphics) but it means they can expand the story, themes and world of GoW further, capitalising on the low productions costs of development on the PS2 using their already established framework AND enjoy the rewards of a massive install base who are looking forward to being able to play the next installment of the series, in good time, without the requirement of purchasing any new hardware (especially not a £400+ pound PS3) AND without any expectations of seeing the gameplay itself diverge drastically from the core..

This allows the Santa Monica team to start work on the PS3 installment and they have just about all the time in the world to take the gameplay, themes and overall design of the franchise and blow it wide open for use with the new hardware.. GoW 3 on the PS3 can see commercial release at literally any point in the PS3's life-cycle giving the team enough time to leverage the technology from the entire SCE group, their own R&D work and also making sure the console has an significant enough install base to provide a greatly profitable enough reception for the title when it ships..

I am really impressed by these vids. However I would not trade it for GRAW or Lost Planet. That era (XB/PS2) is over.

For most it's not.

Assuming it lives up to the original's pedigree, I wouldn't trade GoW2 for Lost Planet, certainly :p Or for many other PS3 and 360 games.

Gameplay-wise, a great game is a great game. We should judge it technically as a PS2 game. In that regard it seems to be at the pinnacle of achievement, which is really nice to see on a console. In 5 or 6 years I hope we see the same magic worked with the new generation of hardware.

The odds are that this is the last game I will play on my PS2 and I could not have dreamed for a more glorious finish for that marvellous system... The vids look just as good as I have hoped, and I'm loving the fact that you can keep your powers and abilities for the second play through, making the experience at least slightly more varied than in God of War 1, which already was easily on my top 3 games of last gen.

Only two more months of waiting...

Well if sales is Sony's primary concern then I understand your point. However, one would think that using such a successful franchise to leverage the sales of the PS3 would have made perfect sense. The need for PS3 hardware sales should trump the need for software sales of the PS2.

Its hard to believe that a Sony team would need until 2008-2009 to put out a top notch game when top quality games from third party developers have already been released and more are schedule for 2007.

GOW2 would have been a perfect candidate to drive hardware sales of the PS3. The fact that its being used to milk software sales out of a dying platform seems like a poor strategic move on Sony's part.

JESUS FREAKING CHRIST!!!!!!!!! What's wrong with some of you guys?:devilish:

Is every darn thing about PS3 sales? GOW2 would have taken years to make on the PS3 and wouldn't be what it should be in 2007. That's it! They made a PS2 engine that cost lots of money too. They would like to recoupe that money some how.

Would you rather have a super great PS2 GOW2 or a subpar PS3 GOW2?

Who says GOW2 would take years to make on the PS3 and would be subpar?

They are a Sony studio, so I doubt the need to recoup investment from developing a PS2 engine is a legitimate reason for forgoing the PS3 development of GOW2.

Well because I read and heard David Jaffe's reasons not to put the game on the PS3. I believe Jaffe is a pretty good person to listen to. ;)

Oh, really? If so then I apoligize. ;)
Yeah I'm about 70% sure they are. They are from the same scene that is in the E3 06 demo they displayed, and I'm sure there were PR screenshots released around that time. According to the dev interview on IGN they have polished up that part since e3 and of course finished pretty much the entire game.

Again, march 13th can't come soon enough. My most anticipated game from any platform. :D

Well, they're different games, but FWIW i also much prefer the look of GOW. It's a personal thing, and it stems from the fact that i'm just a sucker for Greek mythology...

And well, GOW2 seems so be doing things that just wow me just because it's on PS2... Whereas HS is a next gen game... It should look amazing, so i'm not shocked when i see how pretty it is... Know what i mean?
